Art Garfunkel i Paul Simon

Paul Simon i Art Garfunkel van créixer al barri de Kew Gardens Hills, a Queen, Nova York. Van ser companys de classe a l’institut i van segellar la seva amistat durant la infantesa. El 1955 Simon va compondre algunes cançons, com ara el primer tema del duet, Hey, little Schoolgirl, i li va proposar a Garfunkel fer un grup, amb només 16 anys. Van començar amb el nom de “Tom i Jerry”, inspirant-se amb els personatges de dibuixos animats.
Al llarg de la seva vida els dos amics amb el seu estil barreja de folk, pop i  rock han arribat a ser uns dels grups més importants de la història.

Amb el pas dels anys el grup va esdevenir realment molt popular. Malgrat l’èxit obtingut, el duet no estava gaire còmode perquè Simon s’encarregava totalment de la composició dels temes, i Garfunkel no estava tan implicat. El duet es va separar diverses vegades i ells seguien amb les seves caarreres artístiques en solitari però quan tornaven a actuar junts el públic els aclamava. Malgrat tot, sembla que la seva relació personal no era gaire bona.

Actualitat
Aquesta setmana ha estat notícia que Paul Simon, amb 76 anys, abandona la música definitivament. El seu últim concert va ser el passat dissabte 22 de setembre de 2018 a Flushing Meadows Corona Park, molt aprop del lloc on viva de petit.
“Estic molt agraït per una carrera satisfactòria i, sobretot per les persones que van sentir quelcom en la meva música que va commoure els seus cors” va dir Simon recentment.

«The Sound of Silence» és una cançó del duet Simon and Garfunkel. Fou escrita el febrer de 1964 per Paul Simon poc després de l’assassinat de John F. Kennedy el 1963, i va propulsar el grup cap a la fama.

A «The Sound of Silence», Simon toca la guitarra acústica i tots dos canten. Originalment fou gravada com a peça acústica del seu primer àlbum, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. (1964), però sota les ordres del productor de la discogràfica, Tom Wilson, la cançó fou regravada amb percussió, baix elèctric i guitarra elèctrica sense que Simon i Garfunkel ho sabessin ni hi participessin. La cançó fou rellançada com a senzill el setembre de 1965. El senzill va arribar al número u de les llistes l’1 de gener del 1966 i fou inclòs en el posterior àlbum del duet, Sounds of Silence.

Mrs. Robinson
«Mrs. Robinson» és el títol d’una cançó escrita per Paul Simon i cantada per Simon and Garfunkel. Quan va ser llançada com un senzill el 1968. Va formar part de la banda sonora de la pel·lícula El graduat. On hi s’exlicava una història d’amor d’un jove amb una dona molt més gran que ell. Un any després, la cançó apareixia com a part del disc Bookends i va aconseguir arribar al número u del Billboard Hot 100 dels Estats Units, èxit que la banda aconseguí per segona vegada en la seva carrera, després d’haver-ho fet prèviament amb «The Sound of Silence».
Un altre premi que la cançó va donar al duo va ser el Grammy a l’enregistrament de l’any, el 1969.
El significat real de la cançó segons va explicar al cap d’uns anys el seu autor, és un homenatge a DiMaggio, considerat un dels millors jugadors de beisbol de la història.
