FONTAMARA A LA PARET

3rd VISIT: JOB SHADOWING IN THE ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO FONTAMARA IN CERCHIO

It is a new school with 7 classes that start at 08:30 and finish at 16:30 from Monday to Friday and, 2 classes that start at 08:30 and finish at 14:00 from Monday to Saturday.

A total of 64 students can eat in the Canteen but right now, due to Covid, only 50 students eat there. The rest of the students eat in class.

The Government has given them several Aircares to check the quality of the air.

In each class there are no more than 20 students. In some of them, there are 12 and 13 students.

The classes do not have fixed whiteboards because the schools are made of wood in order to resist earthquakes better. Instead, they have movable digital boards.

The principal also told us that the gym and the library will be built next year. Meanwhile, the students bring books from home and exchange them among them. Moreover, the Digital library is very powerful as through Teams and One Note the students can have access to all materials and resources.

They do not have a theatre but they use the one in the village. Three years ago, they read “L’orologio e l’incantesimo del tempo”, a book about the Amatrice earthquake that took place in 2016, The students represented the play in the theatre of Amatrice and gave the funds to the school so that it could be rebuilt.

2nd VISIT: SCHOOL LIBRARY OF THE ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO COLLODI-MARINI IN AVEZZANO

Many years ago, the school library was located upstairs. However, due to Covid, it has moved to the ground floor allowing a safer access. With this change, families from different cultural background not only keep on participating in the learning process of their children, but also spend more time with the Italian language.

Simona, the person in charge, dedicates most of her school hours to organize and carry out projects and activities. The school teachers and Simona are the ones who decide which books to buy.

Regarding the library book catalogue, they have a great variety of examples in different languages. For example, they have a multicultural reading corner with special books in Spanish, Arabic and also translated into Italian.

Concerning the digital resources, the school library has program called MLOL (Media Library OnLine). The community has access to international press as well as an extensive book catalogue. This allows the community to reduce prejudices about immigration and other cultures.

Some activities opened to the community are: concerts, yoga classes, reading with a cup of tea and movie forum.

The school library is also involved in different activities and programs:

  • “Letture Altavoce”: the teachers read aloud an hour a day to their students “It’s the pleasure of reading and listening”.
  • “Giornata della lingua madre”: each student reads a book in his/her mother tongue.
  • Librogame tournament: this project consists on reading 3 different books. There are questions and activities designed by different teachers. The class that answers more correct questions about these books wins a school trip. About 30-40 classes participate in the project.

1st VISIT: SCHOOL LIBRARY IN AGOSTINO PERSIA OF MAZZINI-FERMI SCHOOL IN AVEZZANO

Our first Job Shadowing started Monday morning in the Scuola Primaria “Agostino Persia”. Veronica, the teacher in charge of the library, told us that the school library participates in 2 main national projects promoted by the Government and a regional one:

  • “Read aloud”: an important and known person from Avezzano comes to the school and reads a book out loud in order to promote reading, especially intonation, rhythm and stress.
  • “Leggo Perché”: it started 7 years ago and it allows the library to acquire more books.  First, families buy a book in local bookshops for the school library. Moreover, publishing houses donate books as a gift to all the schools that participate in the project. These books come from a wish list made by the entire faculty.
  • “Patto locale per la lettura”: public and local libraries work together with all schools of the area, approximately 30-40 to create and share activities to foster reading skills.
