Bristol 3

Bristol is located in Great Britain. Bristol is in England. In the north of Bristol is Severn, in the south is Wessex, in the east is Central and in the west is the Celtic sea.

A graffiti artist known Bansky has managed to be very important in contemporary art. He is basically the reason why in Bristol there is so much street art. Along with this, Bristol is a city which encourages this type of art, and also open museums about it, etc.

Bansky is the pseudonym of a British graffiti artist. He was born in Yate, near Bristol, in 1974 or 1975, but he grew up in Bristol. He is between 28 and 35 years old and he began to paint in Bristol between 1992 and 1994.

He is a white, tall man and his hair is blond. He wears baggy clothes typically of graffiti and rappers.

Banksy is the most popular graffiti artist now, but he is an anonymous artist so not many people know his biography.

His paintings criticize politics and culture, and they are a combination of graffiti with slogans. The message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment. His paintings are sometimes in black and white.

Many people think that Banksy’s art is no art but vandalism because sometimes he paints in public spaces, which is illegal.

Bansky works for a charity organization such as Greenpeace and for companies such as Puma or MTV.

The subjects of his pictures include rats, monkeys, policemen, soldiers, children, and the elderly.

Banksy published three books of his pictures from different cities. And he goes into museums and hangs his pictures  illegally.

The Banksy’s exhibition last summer was on 13 June 2009 at “Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery”. In the exhibition there were 100 works of art, and there were 8,500 visitors.

The exhibition lasted twelve weeks and it was visited 300,000 times.

Banksy didn’t let anybody participate in the exhibition. He did the preparatives of the exhibition alone and he represented street situations.

The director of the exhibition wanted to keep it in secret because he thought that Banksy would evade the rules, but finally it was an exciting exhibition.

If we went to Bristol, first of all, we’d like to see the place where the TV series called Skins was filmed. Then we’d like to see some of Banksy’s works live and obviously the most important places in Bristol.

We found this video that summarizes what Bristol people think about his most international artist.

I was in Bristol last year, and I hadn’t a clue that it had a lot of history behind.
Thanks to this project, now, we know more of Bristol and Banksy.
If I have another possiblility to go, I’ll go for second time, and this time I will be able to admire Banksy’s work.
It’s a pity that Banksy’s exhibition was last year, but we could watch many videos on the Internet.
Nowadays, grafitti is illegal, but the work of Banksy is fantastic, and we know he works for a charity organization.
Apart, his graffitis make us think about the problems in the world, and create our own ideas.
This project has been very interesting and we had learned a lot of things.

I’m very interested in this part of the Project, because my sister-in-law is living in Bristol and she has told me and I have seen some photos of graffiti and paintings in the streets and houses from Bristol, and I think that this is going to be a very exciting trip.
Moreover I think that with this project we have learned many things about Banksy who is a very important graffiti artist in contemporary art.
    Good job team!

This part is very interesting and before doing it, I didn’t know that Bristol is the best place to visit if we want to learn about graffiti and especially to see a lot of Banksy’s stencils.
