About one in five adults in the world cannot read or write. Two thirds of them are women. Illiteracy cuts access to better jobs for many. Central Africa and Southeast Asia have the lowest literacy rates. Several western countries are not included, many report nearly universal literacy. In all other regions, literacy is climbing slowly but steadily.
