Our future summer holidays on a cruise

Let’s imagine our future summer holidays on a cruise!

  1. Choose a cruise departing from Barcelona port
  2. Choose a date to travel
  3. What is the name of the cruise ship?
  4. Make plans:
    1. What are you going to do on the cruise?
    2. Are you going to see any of the shows?
    3. What type of food are you going to eat?
    4. Which cities or towns are you going to visit?
    5. What are you going to see or do in each city/town?
  5. What will the weather be like? What do you think?
  6. Is there anything else you think will happen while you’re on the cruise?

My example:

Next summer holidays we’re going to take a cruise: the Western Europe Cruise. We’re going to leave Barcelona on Monday, July 1st. We’re going to travel on The Explorer of the Seas. We’re going to surf on the FlowRider surf simulator and we’re going to play mini-golf while we are onboard. We’re going to eat Italian food at the Giovanni’s Table restaurant. We also think we will drink a milkshake at Johnny Rockets. In the evening we’re going to watch the Fast Forward show because we really like the music from the 80s. We are going to travel to Valencia, Cartagena, Gibraltar, Gijón and Southhampton. In Valencia we are going to swim at the Malvarrosa Beach. In Cartagena we are going to visit the historical Roman Theatre. In Gibraltar we are going to ride on the cable car to go up the Rock of Gibraltar. In Gijón we are going to walk around the fishermen’s quarter of Cimadevilla. Finally, we are going to go shopping in Southhampton. We think the weather will be nice and warm because we are going to travel in the summer. Maybe it will be a bit cooler in the north of Spain and in the UK. We also think that we will make lots of new friends on the cruise.

Get Inspired by last year’s CAPs

Check the Peninsula Community Action Projects in our sites.

All groups prepared a workshop to teach primary school kids (5th grade) at Escola Antoni Gaudí.

One group addressed the content of sugar in drinks. Click on the image to find out!

Since food waste is a huge problem, the other two groups felt it was really important to spread the word to stop it!

So, one group gave a presentation on food waste and prepared a board game for kids to learn more about it: a snake & ladders game. If you waste food, you go down; but if you reuse it, you go up! Click on the image to see everything!

Another board game created by the third group in this class was a memory game. The aim of the game was to find matching pairs of food and examples of food reuse. It was a good experience and kids learned about food waste and food reuse and they also learned English food vocabulary. Check it out by clicking on the image!

Since food waste is a huge problem, another group conducted a street survey on food waste and gave out fridge magnets and bookmarks with the motto “Stop food waste”! Click on the image!

Finally, a third group contacted the local food bank and they collected food which is now needed: pasta, legumes and cereal. The food collection was carried out at the high school and in the street.

Unit 3 Digital Project: Local Waterway

It is clear our local waterway is the Llobregat river.

In the Local Waterway digital project, you will research a local waterway and create a presentation to share your findings about one of the following:

  1. The upper course
  2. The middle course
  3. The lower course
  4. The delta

You will also recommend ways to conserve and protect the waterway.

You need to create a VoiceThread slideshow explaining your slides with your own voice.

Reminders:

Remember to include bibliography, webgraphy and to use images labeled for reuse.

Do not copy paste from the Internet. Use your own words.

Do not fill your slides with too much text, just facts and figures and key words.

What To Do With Grease (In Your Home)

Why is it not safe to pour grease down the drain? Let’s watch this video and check.

Do you think enough people recycle cooking oil in our city?

Maybe this could be an idea for your Community Action Project…

Field trip to Can Julià

Can Julià field trip

On December 10 and 11 we went to Can Julià, a historic local farmhouse which is now the River Interpretation Center. We met two guides, Laia nd Marina. First of all, we went to the 2nd floor to play a giant board game. The board was a river, our river: the Llobregat river. There were the middle and lower course parts of the river and the river mouth. We scored points depending on the cards we had to read on each square. We scored points if we read about positive actions for the river, such as repopulating it with native fauna. We did not score any points if we read about negative actions, such as polluting the river with toxic waste from factories.

After the break we went downstairs and the guides told us about the exhibition panels: Llobregat river is 170km long, its spring is in Castellar de n’Hug, there are stones (sediments) which can filter water but others can’t, etc.

The last part was the funniest: experimenting. We looked into microorganisms using a scientific magnifying glass, we played with jigsaw puzzles to learn about the river flora and fauna, we experimented with water and sediments to see which rocks and stones filtered water, and we also created a delta with sand and water

Finally, we played tag outdoors. There were 2 teams: the true team and the false team. The guide said something about what we had learned about the river and if it was true, teh true team had to catch someone from the false team; and the other way round if what the guide said was false.

Unfortunately, because of the recent rainfall, we could not go to the river for field research, but we are going in spring.

We really enjoyed ourselves and learned a lot. It was an inspiration to brainstorm ideas for our future Community Action Projects. Now we’re looking forward to going the next field trip: the Water Treatment Plant.
