Methodology

This year’s teaching methodology is centered on the student’s autonomy. The 3rd ESO “What’s Up” books offer the main framework of the course, but the activities that students get involved in can come from a variety of different books, including classic grammar books and course books from other publishers.

Here follows a short description of the method:

  • Students are always offered 3 times more than what they need to achieve.
  • Students can choose the exercises they want to do, with a minimum number of activities for each skill: writing, speaking, listening and reading.
  •  Listening activities, speaking activities and computer activities are group based and all the members of the team are responsible for their completion.
  • A dossier is handed to the teacher at the end of each unit, containing all the individual and group exercises that have been completed. Students who do not complete their dossier with the minimum number of activities never receive more than 4.9
  • Each term comprises 3 units, with three exams (50% of the total result), three dossiers and one reader’s book (30%). The remaining 20% is the attitude towards the subject.

I find it interesting but I have a question: are the exercises in the dossier corrected by the teacher? If so, how can students learn from their mistakes if you do not any correcting in class? And how can you do some correcting if they have done different exercises? I like the idea but I feel it would be hard to implement…

Nowdays the students in our school work with a laptop, which means I don’t have to worry about correcting exercises. When they finish a unit, they must give me a dossier with all the exercises. The marking scheme of that dossier includes aspects such as: can I see any mistakes? Are there any exercises repetead in the dossier? Are there aspects of the unit that do not show up? I’d love talking to you about this, a blog is just not suitable, I think. If you want, e-mail me at mblanc12@xtec.cat
