Mark Twain –A Life Full of Stories
Mark Twain was born as Samuel Langhorne Clemens on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri, a small town in the United States. When he was four years old, his family moved to Hannibal, a town near the Mississippi River. This river later became very important in his life and in his books.
Samuel had a difficult childhood. His father died when he was only eleven years old, so he had to leave school and start working to help his family. He worked as a printer’s apprentice and later as a journalist. These early experiences helped him develop his writing skills.
When he was 21, he began working as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. It was an exciting and well-paid job, but it ended when the American Civil War started in 1861. After that, he traveled to the western United States, where he worked as a miner and continued writing for newspapers.
Samuel Clemens chose the pen name “Mark Twain” while working as a journalist. The name comes from a term used by sailors on the river. It means “two fathoms deep,” which indicated that the water was safe for boats.
In 1876, he published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The novel was inspired by his childhood experiences in Hannibal. The character of Tom Sawyer is believed to be based partly on Twain himself.
The book became very popular and is still considered one of the greatest works of American literature.
Later, Twain wrote Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many critics consider his masterpiece. His writing is famous for its humor, realism, and criticism of society.
Mark Twain became one of the most important American writers of the 19th century. He died in 1910, but his stories continue to be read and enjoyed all over the world.
