Number 39!

Let's celebrate!

This calls for celebration!

When activity started in this blog we probably didn’t know that it was going to receive so many visits. After less than a month this blog is listed as number 39 by the Departament d’ Educació. That means that, of all the 4972 blogs at xtec.cat, this is one of the most active!

I am very pleased. It probably confirms that, despite what many people think, the internet can really become a learning tool and an extension of what we do in the classroom.

TV and languages

Sitting comfortably on my sofa and thanks to a satellite dish, I can watch TV channels in the following languages:

  • English (6 channels)
  • German (more than 30 channels!!)
  • French (4 or 5 channels)
  • Arabic (1 channel)
  • Italian (2 or 3 channels, can’t remember exactly)
  • Dutch (3 channels)
  • Catalan (1 channel)
  • Spanish (1 or two channels)
  • Gallician (1 channel)
  • Basque (1 channel)
  • Welsh (1 channel)

There probably are some more that I don’t remember. If I want to expand this offer, I only have to use my internet connection, I can watch channels from all over the world.

However, if I lived in Alacant, I wouldn’t be able to watch TV3 Mutis

Foreign language… Chinese!

Chinese calligraphy

I read this piece of news in avui.cat and I thought it could be interesting. It seems that Panama is going to change the foreign language they teach at schools. The new language is Chinese and the reason is the strong economic relationship between the two countries. Authorities say that in 10 years Panama must have found the necessary infrastructure for the teaching of Chinese, which basically means training new teachers.

Free Catalan-English dictionary!

The ‘Dacco‘ project (Diccionari Anglès-Català de Codi Obert) started the creation of a dictionary some years ago. The philosophy of this project is that everyone can participate and contribute with words and translations, similar to the way ‘wikipedia’ works.

It is not perfect, but it is getting better and better with time. If you want to look up a word, simply use the search function (‘ctrl + f’ or ‘ctrl + b’) and type the word you want.

The file is compressed to only 5.1 mb zip, but it may take a while to begin the download.

Congratulations!!

I would like to congratulate all the students of 3rd ESO grade who passed the irregular test exam. Some of you could only afford to make 2 mistakes out of 20 verbs, and you did it!! So, again, my congratulations.

Budapest is the capital of what European city?

Check out this video from youtube. The TV programme is ‘Are you smarter than a 5th grader’ (Ets més llest que un alumne de primària?), and she is the winner of the American Pop Idol (Operació Triomf). The question is…

“Budapest is the capital of what European city?”

And of course she thinks this is a tricky questions because…

Europe is a country, isn’t it? Sorprès

And then she adds…

well, at least I know they speak French there,Ficada de pota don’t they? !!!
