Now let’s do some exercises to practise the use of connectors.

Exercise 1. Join the following sentences using the words in brackets. Make the necessary changes.

1. Fast food is not nutritious. People eat it. (although)

2. Many people go to live to the USA. There are many difficulties (in spite of)

3. I left early. I wanted to see the news (so that)

4. He always insisted on accompanying her. She thought of an excuse (as)

Exercise 2. Choose the correct answer.

– Sometimes new drivers are careful (whereas/because/because of) experienced drivers are not. (Because/However/yet) there are so many accidents, the government is looking for solutions, (for example/so as to/therefore), raising the minimum driving age.

(In spite of/Although/However) pets are cute, many people don’t want one. They say that (because/besides/apart from) pets are dirty, and (in addition to/nevertheless/moreover) they can also be too noisy.

– Charles Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce, the two men who set up the famous Rolls-Royce car company in 1906, came from different backgrounds. Charles came from a wealthy family, (whereas/apart from) Frederick’s family wasw poor. (Although/Despite) the two men didn’t know each other as children, they became close friends (moreover/in addition) to being business partners. Like many boys from rich families at that time, Charles went to University. (Since/Because of) his love of cars, he decided to study engineering.
