Nicholas the Sweep

Do you know Sainsbury’s supermarket in the UK? It’s their 150th anniversary and they have celebrated it with a heartwarming advert.

I. Before watching the advert check out these words and match them with their definition:

maggot a. extra things that complete or improve the appearance of something
trimmings b. a dark, underground prison
gotcha c. a small insect with a soft body and no legs that often lives in decaying food
chuck d. to send someone away from a place as a punishment
dungeon e. short word for “I got you”
 fair  f. a person who  behaves in a way that is not honest or moral
trial g. to throw something
banish h. a legal process to decide if someone has committed a crime
rotten to the core i. treating everyone in the same way

II. Watch the advert and answer the following questions:

  1. Who does Nick the Sweep remind you of? (Tip: a character from a Charles Dickens’ novel)
  2. Why do you think everybody gets silent when the man asks for a “fair trial”?
  3. When Nick is banished, three ghosts appear. Who are these ghosts?
  4. Who is Nick at the end of the story?
  5. Why do you think his name is Nicholas?

III. Did you like the video? Why/why not?

I. In pairs, think about situations you are scared of when you are little.

II. Do you know who Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Paloma Elsesser are? Watch the video and listen to them explaining scary situations they lived when they were young. Answer the questions when the video stops.

 

III. Now think about something that scared you a lot you were a kid and explain it to a classmate.

My favourite painting

Choose your favourite painting and write a review.

– Write the title of the painting and the author.

Describing a work of art

I. Do you like art?  Do you have a favourite work of art?

II. This is one of my favourite works of art. Do you Know Miquel Barceló?

Look at the picture. What colours can you see? Do you like it?

III. Look at the adjectives in the box. Which ones can you use to describe the painting?

a) Let’s check the meaning of some of these words.

b) Which adjectives are positive? Which ones are negative? Which ones can be both?

c) Do the crossword and find 4 pairs of opposites.

d) What other adjectives can you remember in English? Can any of them describe art?

IV. In pairs, write a sentence using the adjectives to describe the following works of art. Which do you like? Which don’t you like? Why?

Example: The sculpture in number 1 is modern and imaginative. I like number 1 because it is elegant.

I. How often do you go to a restaurant? What is your favourite type of restaurant?

II. Think about a restaurant in Sant Boi you want to recommend to your classmates. Write a review following these steps:

  1. Name of the restaurant.
  2. Address
  3. Opening and closing hours.
  4. Type of food they offer.
  5. Your opinion and dishes you recommend.
  6. Why you like it.

III. Now go to Canva and make a poster for your restaurant. Then write a comment in the blog post about two restaurants your classmates recommended.

III. Now listen to the song again and fill in the gaps. Check your answers with your partner.

IV. This song has been used in a Christmas advert this year. Watch it. Did you like it?

V. Now in pairs, discuss the following questions:

a) What does “Some gifts are more than just a gift” mean?

b) Gift may have two different meanings. Which ones?

c) Can you think of a gift that meant a lot to you? What was it? Why was it important to you?

d) Do you find it difficult to make presents?

e) Think of a friend who is really gifted. What would you give her/him for Christmas?
