The history of a product

In groups of three, you are going to do a presentation about the history of a product. It can be any general product you like or you find interesting or it can be a specific brand.

You can use Power Point, Google Slides, Prezi … to do you presentation. Remember to include bibliography, webgraphy and to use images labeled for reuse. If the images are not labeled for reuse, don’t forget to attribute them! You can also include a video or anything you find interesting and is significant.

You can write your names and the products or brands in these lists: STUDENTS’LIST

You need to add the following information:

1- How did this product get its name?

2- Why did people use it?

3- What was it made from?

4- How did it become popular?

5- Who used them?

6- What has happened to this product/brand recently?

7- Is this product popular today?

Remember that your Power Point is a kind of guide that you follow to present the information. Do not copy paste from the Internet, use facts and figures and key words in the slides and use your own words to explain them. You can use index cards to remember what you want to explain.

The presentation must be sent to me by email by Monday 12th March as the latest.

  4. In most films we can easily pick out the star. However, who do you think is the real star in Australia: Lady Sarah Ashley, the Drover or Nullah? Why?
  5. Describe King George under the following headings:

    2. Character
    3. Role

  7. Who is Australia’s narrator? Why do you think the story is narrated by this character?
  8. In the film Lady Sarah Ashley tells Nullah the story of The Wizard of Oz to comfort him when his mother dies. He later sees the film at an open air cinema. What song does Lady Sarah Ashley sing to Nullah? When does the song appear again in the film? What do you think is the significance of this?
  9. Look at the film poster designed to promote the film Australia. What does it tell you about the film? Do you think it’s an effective design? Why/not? Which element in particular might influence audiences?
  10. For exteriors, the director relied on the beauty of the Australian landscape as a backdrop for his epic tale. Do you think the use of these stunning landscapes would attract people to Australia? Why/not?

II. Did you like the movie? Submit your opinion in a comment to this post.

III. What is “The Stolen Generation”? Find out about it.

IV. The ‘Outback’, ‘bush’, ‘never never land’ and ‘big backyard’ are all names which refer to remote dry areas of Australia. Why do you think one of the names for the Outback is ‘never never’? What kind of landscape is this?

The tragedy of the commons

“Is it possible that overfishing, super germs, and global warming are all caused by the same thing? In 1968, a man named Garrett Hardin sat down to write an essay about overpopulation. Within it, he discovered a pattern of human behavior that explains some of history’s biggest problems. Nicholas Amendolare describes the tragedy of the commons.”

Go to TedEd to watch the video and do the activities. You’ll need to sign in with your name and surname to complete them.
