Assessment scales for the Writing Test.

Examiners mark tasks using assessment scales that were developed with explicit reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The scales, which are used across the spectrum of Cambridge English General and Business English Writing tests, consist of four subscales: Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation, and Language:

  • Content focuses on how well the candidate has ful lled the task, in other words if they have done what they were asked to do.
  • Communicative Achievement focuses on how appropriate the writing is for the task and whether the candidate has used the appropriate register.
  • Organisation focuses on the way the candidate puts together the piece of writing, in other words if it is logical and ordered.
  • Language focuses on vocabulary and grammar. This includes the range of language as well as how accurate it is.Responses are marked on each subscale from 0 to 5.captura-de-pantalla-2016-11-06-a-las-10-17-46

SCORE SYSTEM. MARKS ARE OUT OF 100. AN OVERALL MARK OF 60% IS REQUIRED TO PASS. If you achieve a grade B or C in the exam, you will receive the First Certificate in English at Level B2. If you achieve a grade A, this means you performed exceptionally well and that your English is above B2 level. Your certificate will show that you received the First Certificate in English and that you showed ability at Level C1. If your performance is below B2 level, but within B1 level, (grade D) you will get a Cambridge English certificate stating that you showed ability at Level B1.
