Unit 5. Community in Action
In Unit 5, students reflect on Digital Age issues they have learned this year and choose one issue to address in their community.Our students work as a class or in small groups to set a goal for their Community Action Project. As they create their project, they research organizations that have worked to address the same issue. They take photos and videos to document their project from start to finish, and create a final presentation to share their CAP with their international peers.

FIND INSPIRATION
Many of the issues that need improvement in communities are being adressed by various organizations: non-profits, NGOs and governmental.
DO
Do basic internet research to identify organizations doing a similar work for example in your town hall website and then answer questions on page 80 of your workbook.
DISCUSS
1. What is the name of the organization, and what issue do they work to address?
2. Why is their work important?
3. What is the goal?
4. Do they use technology to address their goal and how?
5. What challenges do they face?
6. What can we learn from their work that will help us with our community action Project?
Write a letter or a g-mail to contact these organizations and tell them about the Project that you are about to create asking for more information.

2015–16 Community Action Project Video
Students at CEIP Victor Catala, in Barcelona, created this video to document their work to bring green spaces to their community.
Energy Conservation Program, Barcelona (Building Better Cities: 2015–16 Community Action Project)
Students designed a series of workshops to teach their school community about reducing energy use. They created a website with sections to highlight their research (“Ready”), project goals (“Steady”), process of taking action (“Go!”), and evaluation of their impact (“Achievement”).
Water Scholars, Taipei (Water Wise Cities: 2014–15 Community Action Project)
Nangang Elementary School students in Taipei documented their Community Action Project focused on advocating for cleaner water by creating a class website.

Town Hall meeting
Today a group of 12 class ambassadors, together with the school principal, Ma José Gómez and the English teachers, Cristina Armario and Mireia Xortó, have visited the Town Hall. We met the Education and Media officers and advisors to let them know about our findings when we explored the city’s website.
We brought them some suggestions on how to improve the site based on our analysis and on some ideas we got from our peers’ contributions on the “Kids Connect” global discussion in Unit 2.
We also congratulated them on some effective PSAs (Public Service Announcements) and we asked for advice on the CAP (Community Action Project) we are bout to start.
