What are Modal Verbs?

Modal verbs are special verbs which behave very differently from normal verbs. Here are some important differences:

1. Modal verbs do not take “-s” in the third person.

Examples:

  • He can  speak Chinese.
  • She should  be here by 9:00.

2. You use “not” to make modal verbs negative, even in Simple Present and Simple Past.

Examples:

  • He should not be late.
  • They might not come to the party.

3. Many modal verbs cannot be used in the past tenses or the future tenses.

Examples:

  • He will can go with us. Not Correct
  • She musted study very hard. Not Correct

For the purposes of this tutorial, we have included some expressions which are not modal verbs including had better, have to, and have got to. These expressions are closely related to modals in meaning and are often interchanged with them.

The Snapper and Angela’s Ashes, 2 films 2 see/watch!!!!!!

0

The Snapper (1993)

The Snapper is Stephen Frears’ adaptation of the second book in Roddy Doyle’s Barrytown Trilogy. The Curley family is a poor but eccentric and loving Irish family. Oldest daughter Sharon (Tina Kellegher) announces she is pregnant, but refuses to reveal the identity of the father to anyone. Her father, Dessie (Colm Meaney), is supportive, but begins to chafe at the derisive gossip aimed at his family and his daughter. This leads to a confrontation between the two that is, like the rest of the movie, simultaneously funny and sad. The family waits in the hospital as Sharon gives birth to the snapper (Irish slang for an infant).

Unit 1: The way we learn. Writing an e-mail!

Dear Grace,

I’m happy to see that you’re great. I’m going to tell you about my family and school.

In my family we are four, my mother, my father and my sister-who is older than me- but she isn’t here now. She’s studying in Finland so I can’t see her in months. I’m so lonely now and I hate it, so I’m looking forward to Christmas, because she’s coming, and probably my grandmother too.

The school is boring, but now I can study what I want and it’s better than last year. My favorite subject is Physical Education, because I like doing exercise, but I hate Catalan, because it’s too boring and I am with all the class. But it doesn’t matter, because there are only two hours a week.

What’s about your family and your school? Write soon, please.

See you,

First Batx girl
