Hands-on: Raincloud in a Jar

The other day we carried out an experiment in the laboratory. We learnt that when clouds get so full of water that they can’t hold any more, the water falls back to the ground as rain. Steps:
1- Fill a jar about 3/4 full with tap water.
2- Use the shaving foam to create a cloud on top of the water.
3- Let the foam settle a bit.
4- Now drop some food colouring into the ‘cloud’. As it fills up, the food colouring will fall down into the water creating a rain-like effect.

Hands-On! – Colour Changing Milk

First graders have carried out a very easy and safe experiment. Steps:

1- Pour some milk onto a plate or bowl.

2- Add some drops of food colouring over the milk, right to the centre.

3- Dip a cotton bud into some liquid soap (dish soap).

4- Place the cotton bud with the drop of soap directly onto the food colouring and watch the colourful fireworks!

The milk fat interacts with the soap, which causes the milk to go wild!

Some children took the roles of Billy and Splodge and acted out the story. We had a lot of fun!

1st graders also drew a picture of their “friend” from outer space! See the photos below.
