Unit 3. Digital Project

Local Waterway Collage.png

In the Local Waterway digital project, your students will research a local waterway and create a presentation to share their findings. They will also recommend ways to conserve and protect the waterway.

 DESIGN PROCESS SKILL: CREATE

To successfully create their project, students need to use effective teamwork skills. They receive guidance on this skill on page 55 of the student workbook. Below are some resources to help them develop their abilities:

Using Voicethread, students can create their Local Waterway presentation and explain it with their own voice. Use the tutorials below to learn more about how to use this digital tool.

Unit 3. City Solutions. Evaluate City Solutions

City governments around the world use different solutions to manage drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater.

Evaluate: City Solutions

Watch the following videos and presentations in the e-classroom about city solutions to water issues. Evaluate each solution using questions in the boxes belowDoes your city have a different solution? How could you find out? Evaluate and share it in the discussion this week.

What problem does this solution try to solve?
How does this solution keep the city´s water safe?
Does your city have the same problem?
How could this solution work in your city?

Unit 3. Analyze: Water Impact Quiz

Drains are helpful in taking wastewater away, but putting contaminants down a drain can hurt a city´s water system and pollute waterways. Take the quiz below to see if you know what you can and can´t put down a drain.

CAN JULIÀ. CENTRE D’INTERPRETACIÓ DEL RIU LLOBREGAT: l’aigua flueix, transforma i acull

Hi vam anar perquè enguany estem realitzant el projecte de Globa Scholars “World of Water”.

Unit 3. Clean Water and Sanitation

Week 1: From Nature to Faucet

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation: Use this illustration by Margaret De Heer to teach students about a relevant Sustainable Development Goal from the United Nations. Ask the following questions to discuss:

  • (Beginner) According to this illustration, what are some of the things that we must do to make sure everyone has clean water and sanitation?http://cdn.worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org/2016/06/A-To-Do-List-for-the-Planet_Page_07_Image_0001.jpg

Unit 3. From Nature to Faucet. Research: City Water System

Learn where your city´s water comes from. Watch the following videos, do online research or interview someone who works with water and answer the questions below. Remember to collect pictures  or take photos of your interview to share in the e-classroom.

USEFUL WEBS RESEARCH: CITY WATER SYSTEM

  1. Explain the cycle of water in your own words.

2. Where does our city access its water ( body of water, groundwater, or a faraway location? How far does it travel to reach our city?

3. How is our city treat water so that it is safe for people to use?

4. What are the challenges to providing clean, safe water in our city?

5. What are the different types of wastewater, and what happens to wastewater in our city?

6. What can people do to help our water supply stay clean and safe?

7. What else are you curious about? Write your own questions to research

Unit 3. Water in our Cities

Purification Plant Near City Isometric Composition

This unit asks students to investigate their city’s water system. They learn how water gets into and out of the city, and investigate how water is treated before and after we use it by interviewing a city water worker. In the digital project, they research a local waterway to learn its role in their city’s water system and culture, and reflect on ways to conserve this natural resource.

Essential Understandings:

  • Cities have complex systems for managing, processing, and accessing water.
  • Waterways contribute to the economy, transportation, and culture of our cities.
  • Human actions and innovations can improve water issues.

DISCUSS

It is a challenge to provide clean, safe water for the many people who live in a city. Many people and resources are needed to make this happen. Water is also part of a city´s history. The location of cities around the world is often connected to the availability of water.
