Crocodile terror

 premi prosa batxillerat (anglès)

In the afternoon, we were sitting by the fire. The sun was setting, and it started to be cold. We were all in silence, looking at the fire, the cat was slipping between our legs.

            –Nickey, come here! –Said Josh.

The cat watched him for a moment, and then came towards him. He sat on his lap, and Josh began to caress him.

The young man looked at us, we were sitting around him, and he said:

–Why don’t we tell a horror story?

Nobody answered, but I thought it was a good idea: the silence was begining to be uncomfortable.

–Well, if you don’t say anything, maybe I should get started… –said Josh–. It’s the story of four people sitting around the fire one afternoon… The sun was setting, it was cold… There was a cat. His eyes were staring at the river…

I noticed that it was our situation, so I felt the impulse of looking at the cat. I felt a bit weird when I realised that Nicky was actually looking at the river.

–That story is a shit –Said Melanie laughing–. Let me tell you a real horror story… It’s about a man who turned into a crocodile, he was a crocodile hunter…!

–That is a shit –said Frankie.

We were all laughing now. I felt better because Josh’s story made me feel afraid, and I dindn’t like it.

            Then Frankie said:

–I will tell a real story about a crocodile. It is told that, some time ago, a little crocodile escaped from the zoo and hid in the sewers of this town. A friend of my father told him that the firemen were all in alert: they should be ready to catch it. As you know, the sewers are really contaminated, so it was possible that the animal had mutated…

The silence surrounded us again, and we looked at each other. Then, suddenly, Nicky sprang off Josh’s lap and disappeared.

–That’s silly! You are an idiot! – I said.

–That’s impossible! –said Melanie–. My story was better.

Everybody was talking now, but I knew we were really afraid. In the end, we dindn’t know what else to say. It was already dark and, all I wanted to do was going home. I knew all of us felt the same.

            Again, the silence.

            And then…

            …

            …

… the scream of a ca!!!.

Some of us sprang, some shouted. I felt I was going to die.

            We dind’t dare to move.

Frankie was the first to move, trying to look calm.

–The scream came from the river. Let’s go.

I looked at Melanie and Josh, and they stood up, ready to go with him. I didn’t want to stay alone so I stodd up too. I took the lamp from my bag and I followed them.

We walked some meters, till we arrived at the river. It was very dark there.

            –Nicky, are you there?

I tried to find him with my lamp, but nothing move. Then we heard a noise, coming from the water.

When I lighted the water, the only thing we saw was a trickle of blood.

THE END
