INSIDE THE CAGE
20:00h
While Miren was checking the route we should be taking, I started to arrange the backpacks.
– I think we can already go. Have you taken all that stuff? – I nodded my head as she was looking around the room. – Perfect, let me help you with that. –
All of a sudden, we went out as Joe was waiting for us.
– I hope we haven’t left anything. Just in case, look over again. Do remember we are going to arrive at 23:00, please, don’t be late. – said Miren firmly.
– Everything is under control, don’t worry. – We trust him, he already helped us a great deal in the past. Joe opened the trapdoor. – Good luck my friends and be safe.
21:45h
I was inspecting the street before I rose the grille. We were standing in front of the mossy door. We switched the torches off and knocked.
– We thought that you wouldn’t come. – Sara opened the door shyly. The fact of being locked up was affecting her dearly. Before, Sara used to be a young woman with a stunning smile. But now, she was baggy as she had bags under her eyes and you could notice all the pain that was happening in her pupils. Her brown hair is increasingly greying and her hands are wrinkled. – What have you brought? – said while she was closing the door behind us.
– Some medicines, bandages for the wounds and a delicious soup that I cooked yesterday, sure you like it.
The walls were faded and you could see in which conditions they were. The Jewish were laying on the ground with some blankets. We started to take out all the things and we put them on the table.
– You have been so kind with us; I don’t know how to express my gratitude for all this. I feel that these walls are leaning more and more and, in any moment, they might fall on top of our bodies. The kids want to see the sky… How can I say to them that we are not allowed to do something so natural? – Her eyes started to shed tears. Miren hugged her while she was calming Sara down while whispering things that I could not hear.
23:00h
– We have to go. – Sara said anxiously. – And this time we have to go step by step, Joe told me that the Nazis had strengthen security, so we have to be even more careful.
– Then, I go first.
– No, you are faster and you will reach me. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine
23:15h
Miren grasped the bag and kissed my cheek.
– See you, don’t forget to close the grille.
She said goodbye to Sara and she opened the door. I really admired her will power. Then, I listened to screams and something metallic fell down. Sara got closer to the walls and started to listen to the outdoor conversation. She turned to me as she was very scared.
– You can’t go out. – Then she turned to the Jewish. – Please, stay on your blankets and switch the lights off, we are in great danger.
– What? What have you heard?
– The officers saw how Miren escaped. They didn’t see her face; they only heard the grille nose. Surely, they covered the grating and took a look inside the house. You can sleep behind those boxes.
7:00h
I felt a hand on my shoulder. Sara’s intense green eyes were looking at me fixedly.
– The officers will be coming in 5 minutes. Please, be quiet here. If you were caught, it would be something extremely horrible.
The officers arrived and hit the door heavily. At that moment my heart was beating as never before. I listened to screams, a lot of screams, things falling down and, finally, steps near me. My head was spinning so much that I thought I would lose consciousness at any time. Then, I felt something cold on my head. I looked up. A gun was on my forehead.
