International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

25th November

The Unforgettable ButterfliesIn December 1999, the 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 54/134 declaring November 25th the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The origins of November 25th go back to 1960, when the three Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic were violently assassinated for their political activism. While dictator Trujillo was governing, the sisters prepared a plot to overthrow the government. They were determining their performance when someone killed them. The sisters, known as the “Unforgettable Butterflies,” became a symbol of the crisis of violence against women in Latin America. November 25th was the date chosen to commemorate their lives and promote global recognition of gender violence, and has been observed in Latin America since the 1980s.

The White Ribbon White Ribbon Day is the international day when men wear a white ribbon to show they don’t tolerate men’s violence towards women. The White Ribbon Campaign was started by a group of men in Canada in 1991 in response to the killing of 14 female students at Montreal University by a man. When he murdered the students, they were spending their time at University. He killed them while hundreds of students were watching him. This is the third year that dozens of government, social service and voluntary agencies as well as UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) are working together to raise awareness of White Ribbon Day and the week leading up to it. The Families Commission has ordered 500,000 ribbons, 20,000 posters, 20,000 metal ribbons and 5,000 stickers.
