The Castanyada is a tradition of Catalonia held on All Saints’ Day, but lately it has shifted the celebration on the eve of this day. Like Halloween, La Castanyada comes from an ancient ritual funeral feast. It consists of a meal of chestnuts, marzipan, candied sweet potatoes and fruit. The typical drink is the muscat.

This is an old picture of a ‘Castanyera’, a woman who roasts chestnuts on the street. In the past, she picked chestnuts from the woods, roasted them on the streets and sold them to children and people. She sold the roasted chestnuts in paper cones. Some people still roast chestnuts on the streets; they are usually students who are collecting money for their end-of-year school trips.



The panallets, are the typical dessert in All Saints’ celebration, in the celebration of the Castanyada. Panallets are small pastries made of pine nuts, almonds and sugar. You can decorate them with other sweet food like coconut, candied fruit, etc.

Panallets is a tradition of Catalonia. Its mass is made of flour, but you can use potatoes but inside its got sugar you can put on the top powdered sugar and you can put too almond. Sometimes the parents drink some kind of wine called muscatel.

The muscat variety of grapes of the species Vitis vinifera is widely grown for wine, raisins and table grapes. Their color ranges from white to near black. Muscat almost always has a pronounced sweet floral aroma.

Roasted chestnuts are the typical food of la Castanyada. Some people roast chestnuts on the streets on the 1st of November and sell them in paper cones. Chestnuts are delicous for children.


Sweet potatoes are a plant, with edible roots. On The Castanyada Day, in Catalonia, we eat it with panellets and other typical food of this celebration. We put them in the microwave or in the oven for about 20 minuts and when they are soft, we cut them into slices, add some oilive oil and salt, and eat them


Quince is a fruit that is typical of autumn. It is hard and rough. The skin is greenish in color from yellowish brown and very hard.

•          1/2 pound chestnuts


1. Preheat oven to 425 F.

2. Find the flat side of each chestnut and cut a large X with a sharp paring knife all the way through the skin.

3. Place chestnuts on a shallow baking pan and place in the oven to roast for about 30 to 40 minutes. Shake pan several times to rotate chestnuts so they will cook evenly.

4. If you just want them cooked enough to peel, roast for 10 to 15 minutes.

.  5. Peel roasted chestnuts as soon as they are cool enough to handle. Once they cool completely, they are difficult to peel. However, they may be reheated briefly to aid in peeling.

Chestnuts may also be roasted on the outdoor grill. Watch carefully and turn them often.

Another favorite method for small amounts is stovetop, particularly on a gas stove. Place on top of a flame-tamer and cover with a deep lid. Roast over low heat until done, about 10 minutes, turning often to cook evenly.
