Police Officer Killed In Suspected ETA Attack In Spain

A Spanish police officer has been killed and four others have been injured in a car bomb attack at a police barracks in the Spanish Basque country. Although no one has claimed responsibility, authorities suspect ETA of being behind the attack which took place in an area frequently targeted by the armed separatist group.

The explosion went off shortly before 3 am in the town of Legutiano.

Three wounded men were immediately transported to hospital. Two other victims were found under the rubble of the collapsed building – one of them was already dead.

Since the de facto end of the ceasefire in December 2006, when two people were killed in an ETA attack at Madrid airport, the group has twice targeted police barracks injuring several people.

The terrorist group has killed more than 820 people in the past four decades in its fight for an independent Basque country.

Its most recent fatal victim had been former small town socialist politician Isaias Carrasco, who was shot dead on March 7 just days before Spain’s legislative election.

ETA is one of the biggest challenges facing Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who won a second term in the vote.
