Chapter one

” It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”.

This is, without doubt, one of the most famous opening lines in the world of English literature.

And not without good reason, as these 23 words speak volumes… through them, Jane Austen manages both to introduce the all-important topic of the book (marriage) and to give us a taste of the general tone of the book: a humorous and highly ironic one.
