III. ANARCHISM.
(…)
Trial of Rull.
On the 27th March the trial of Juan Rull and about a dozen other suspected anarchists
began at Barcelona before the Chief Court of the province. Great public interest was
aroused by the proceedings, the more so that a bomb explosion followed closely on his
Majesty’s visit to the town. Rull was a well-known anarchist, but since 1906 had been
employed as an informer by successive Governors. The evidence at the Trial proved that
Rull, while taking money from the town authorities, was connected with several of the
recent explosions. It was also clear that the outrages had lost any real character, and
were mainly used to levy blackmail. Rull, his mother and other brother were found guilty
and sentenced to death, while another brother received fourteen years’ imprisonment.
The principal offender was subsequently executed, the capital sentence in the other two
cases being commuted.
