1) What will be the main activity (in general) of this new center?
2) Which topics does he mention where Maths can be applied?
3) Which three specific branches will be studied in? Try to imagine and explain in your words what they are (which relation have with your math studies now).
Don’t be literal in your answers please….
1. What will be the main activity of this new center?
I think that the main activity of this new center will be the analysis of mathematical models, that thanks to the capacity of calculate and the ability to visualize and interpret data that computer have, they will deal with energy, biology or materials while being mathematicians.
And they will show to the people that maths can be useful in all the society.
2. Which topics does he mention where maths can be applied?
During the new, he says that maths can be applied in many topics of the modern society: aircraft design, finding oil, clean floors, detect tumors, in energy, in biology, materials… But there are many things more where maths can be applied in your daily life: when you go to the sales, when you go to the supermarket…
3. Which three specific branches will be studied there? Try to imagine and explain I your words what they are.
There are three branches that will be studied there:
1. The multiphysics and investment focused on using advanced numerical methods to simulate and analyze different physical phenomena(It can also be used for planes and for medicine) I think that this branch it’s more related to physics that with maths, but it has a very big relation with maths too. I think that they will use physics instruments and formulas and also maths to analyze different physical phenomens. It has some relations with our maths studies, but not a lot, I think that to do this branch, they can use some numerical methods that we have learnt and also some typical thinks of maths, operations… and I think they can also use graphs or functions to express some physical phenomens.
2. They will focus on do Internet better. I think that they will create better connexions, networks… But I think that this hasn’t any important relation with our maths studies. There is a relation of operations and all this…
3. Control and optimization, numerical analysis and partial differential equations, it seems that this branch has a little relation with our maths studies: The equations and numbers… All this will be use for mechanisms, translate all things that a human create for abstractions, and to study space and time.
1) What will be the main activity (in general) of this new center?
Aswering the questions that some studients that doesn’t like maths ask: “What will equations and algebra it be use in their life in the future?”. From the investigations of BCAM called in spanish: Centro Vasco de Matemáticas Aplicadas, that there mention diferent topics math can be applied.
2) Which topics does he mention where Maths can be applied?
In the text mention that: aircraft design, finding oil, clean floors and even in chemistry detect tumors, study the network communications, especialy, it will focus on improving Internet, optimize the quality of its infrastructure, its applications and wireless networks.
3) Which three specific branches will be studied in? Try to imagine and explain in your words what they are (which relation have with your math studies now).
The first branch is control and optimization, its about of find a way how to set up a mechanism or process perspective and it apply numbers and algebraic words for calculate and control for example the force of the wind.
The second branch is a numerical analysis, its about to translate everything the human being created by abstraction, to images, videos or other formats that can be viewed with a computer. I think that is to transform abstract images in numbers and reverse.
The third branch is a partial differential equation, that is easier to study phenomena involved in space and time factors. It could be that is using a type of equetions that help us to the term of space and time.
1) What will be the main activity of this new center?
From my point of view, the main activity of this new center will be the analysis of mathematical models that reproduce natural phenomena, science and technology. That is, the center will deal with energy, biology or materials while being mathematical. Of course they will express what all the people say; they will explain and proof that math’s are good and necessary.
2) Which topics does he mention where Math’s can be applied?
The topics that he mentions where Math’s can be applied are:
-Aircraft design
-Finding oil
-Clean floors
-Detect tumors
– Improve Internet
-…
And of course the basic math that w applied in our life:
-Calculate two percentages to know which is less expensive with more content.
– The area of one wall to be painted.
-…
3) Which three specific branches will be studied in? Try to imagine and explain in your words what they are (which relation have with your math studies now).
1- One branch will be to improve Internet to make it better, improve the programs, the wireless networks… I think that this hasn’t relation of our daily math studies.
2- Other branch is control and optimization, numerical analysis and partial differential equations. This branch is useful to know how to set up a mechanism or process perspective. IN my opinion this branch has a relation with our daily maths: equations, algebra, operations…
3- The other branch is the multiphysics and the investment of the use of advance numerical methods to simulate and analyze different phenomena; it can be used in other aspects, for example: for planes and for medicine. From my point of view, this branch is not related at all with the math’s studies of those days but the aspects that I think that we study related to this branch are: the numbers, the operations, to draw graphs or functions representing phenomens…
1. What will be the main activity of this new center?
This new center does a lot of activities that keep the maths in other areas, but like the text says, they are going to concentrate in the improvement of the Internet.
2. Which topics does he mention where Maths can be applied?
Well, he mention three:
1- To recreate the aerodynamics
2- To detection of hydrocarbons in oil reservations
3- To detect the tumors in the human body
3. Which three specific branches will be studied in? Try to imagine and explain in your words what they are.
1- To optimize the quality of his infrastructures. Guess it means about the places in Internet, and all this stuff.
2- Internet applications. I suppose that it talks about all the programs that need Internet to work, so they want to make them better.
3- The wireless networks. I guess it means that they want to make better all this kind of ways to have Internet. Maybe because nowadays, they are too slow, or too bad… I don’t really know.
1. What will be the main activity of this new center?
The main activity of this center will be study mathematic models that reproduce phenomens of the cience, nature… They will use numeric methods to analize phisics phenomens, with the help of big computers. Another activity will be improve Internet.
2.Which topics does he mention where Maths can be applied?
He mention some topics like the aircraft design, finding oil, descontamination of the floors, detect tumors of the people, improve internet, the medicine…
3.Which three specific branches will be studied in? Try to imagine and explain in your words what they are.
I think that the three specific branches that will be studied in are:
·Nature, they help the nature using maths. For example like I said before the descontamination of the floors, finding oil. With this things they help and they study the nature.
·Science, they help the branch of the medicine using maths. They detect tumors that the people have, they help to find some new medicines…
·Tecnology, they try to improve internet using maths. And other things related to tecnology like aircraft design…
1) The main activity of this center will be investigate about math related to other branches like chemistry or medicine and try to realize in what we can use it in the society like in the scanners and try to relate with this things. For that they use their web to try to know opinions of the estrange people. And also like Claudia said try to fins how they can be use in the society.
2)In the new there are mentioned the following topics were maths can be applied:
aircraft design, finding oil, clean floors, detect tumors, in energy, aerodynamic, in cmputers in genereal, pyshics…
3) The first branch they mention is the one realted to use maths knowledge to try to use in the numerical methods like algebra to obtain things of the nature like petrol or in the medicine like try to see the tumors or maybe try to simulate phenomena that can be use to improve our live and try to do it easier and with more commodities. This branch uses maths but it focus on some other things that the point that we are using maths so we take the word of the maths and we focus in that we are doing physics or medicine. This point that we can’t see that we are using maths is maybe why the young people aren’t interested in maths and think that they aren’t useful.
Other tries to improve the word of technology related to computer and its programmers and make it better and easier with the knowledge of maths we can use the binary programmer 0101 and all the word of pixels and technology is also related with numbers and algebra.
The last one is related with control and optimization, with numerical analysis that like Claudia said is also related with the studies we are tacking now so I don’t know what I can say in addition.
1) In my opinnion, the main activity is… math (hmmm… silly joke. Nevermind). Above any joke, I’d say that the main theme is the effort people do to improve some aspects of our life using maths.
2) There are lots of topics, and some of them are really interesting: aircraft designing, detect tumors of the people, cleaning floors, improving internet, finding oil, upgrading medicine, technology… and soon others that after will be discovered (and improved of course).
3) I agree with Anna, because we could classify these elements into some general branches as she did (nature, science and technology) and then make some sub-branches. For example, the sub-branch of medicine could be into science, and so on. Besides, there are people who think that maths is just to calculate and sometimes, in a wide way, it reaches some points of technology. That’s not true. Math has also helped to develop medicine. To put another example: finding oil. How do they do that? Well, I guess calculating some exacts points where there is plenty of this (maybe because of the ground’s status or its properties…). And at last, but not least, I’d like to mention technology, as before. All these years we have really improved this part of our life. Let’s take a look, as Andrea said, to wireless networks. Nowadays I think it’s not legal to steal the Internet from others, so maybe they’re trying to make a new system by waves (like cellphones) instead of cable. It could be faster (and maybe more echonomical, don’t you think?).
1- What will be the main activity of this new center?
I think that the main activity of this new center will be the analysis of mathematical models, that thanks to the capacity of calculate and the ability to visualize and interpret data that computer have, they will deal with energy, biology or materials while being mathematicians.
And they will show to the people that maths can be useful in all the society.

3.Which three specific branches will be studied in? Try to imagine and explain in your words what they are.
I think that the three specific branches that will be studied in are:
a) Nature: they help the nature using maths. For example like I said before the descontamination of the floors, finding oil. With this things they help and they study the nature.
b) Science: they help the branch of the medicine using maths. They detect tumors that the people have, they help to find some new medicines…
c) Tecnology: they try to improve internet using maths. And other things related to tecnology like aircraft design…
1) What will be the main activity of this new center?
The main activity of this center is to investigate how mathematics can intervene in life, as the study on social nets, water and climate change. But it is also focus on other areas such as aviation or medicine.
2) Which topics does he mention where Maths can be applied?
The text mentions that the center will do research, so that there is progress in medicine to detect tumors, in aeronautics, the design of aircraft, to develop communications network to improve Internet, and many more research is in place.
3) Which three specific branches will be studied in?
The three branches that study are: nature, research on climate change on water pollution and about what solutions can be applied. The technology, investigating improvements to the network of social nets, on infrastructure and also aviation. Science, research on various heads such as medicine, to detect tumors or medicines for research in finding antidotes for diseases.
I searched information about the scientist Enrique Zuazua, was born in Eibar (Guipúzcoa). He graduated in Mathematics from the Universidad del País Vasco. He received his Ph.D. from the University Pierre et Marie Curie. He has had an extensive career college. And because of that made a name for research. Now he directs the new center that speaks the article, the BCAM.
1. In my opinion the main activity will be the analysis of mathematical models, science and technology(Internet).
2.In aeronautics, to work with Internet and in medicine to detect the tumors in the body.
3.The three branches are:
a)Technology to improve Internet with maths.
b)Science. Finding new medicines, detect the tumors in the body..
c)Nature. Climate change, etc..
I searched information about BCAM (Basque Center for Applied Mathemetics). It sets itself the following aims:
-To develop an internationally competitive and recognized science and technology
-To improving social perception of Mathematics in its different facets.
-To attract private and public funding (both nationally and internationally)
-To foment collaboration as the major scientific and technological advances.
-To contribute to the presence of Mathematics in this area.
1. I think that the main activity in this new center will be the multiphysics and methods to simulate and analyze physical phenomens.
2. He mention that we can apply maths in the medicine to seach tumors in any part of the body, to improve the detection of hydrocarbons, to study the network comunication, to improve Internet and study the physic of materials.
3. TECHNOLOGY. (the improvement of Internet)
MEDICINE. (Study blood flow and the tumors search)
NATURE. (To decontaminate the water)
1. I think that what this centre want to make people understand that now mathematics are like a key of the social activities as designed with modern aircraft, find petrol, decontaminated land and ever detect tumours.
2. Like i say in answer 1. we can use to design modern air-crafts, to find petrol, to decontaminate land and to detect tumours.
3. The three branches are technology, nature and science.
Technology is used to advance numerical methods to simulate and analyse, using supercomputers.
Science is used to find medicines for the diseases in the body.
Nature to the climate.
1. The most important activity is study the branch of natural material like the energy, the biology and others materials with the help of comuters and Internet.
2. Can be applied in the everyday in any situation. They also study aircraft design, finding oil and to detect tumours in perons or animals.
3. If you think a little bit you see that technology (Internet), naturals(tumors…) and biologie (know more about the water) is related to de science of the world.
1) I think that in this center they do a lot of things. But the main activity is that they teach to the people the good part of maths. They try to explain that maths are not dificult if we can and they are trying to make that the people who said maths are boring can found a interestant part in this subject.
2) They talk about the networks, energy and biology, they say that we can detect tumors in chemisry too. They talk about clan floors, airfact design and find oil too.
But i think its not only that… With naths we can do a lot of things that they didn’t say in the new.
3) I think the 3 brabches could be:
NATURE: About all the thing that we can use maths in nature: energy, clean floors, find oil..
SCIENCE: About arithmetic and chemistry.. We can detect tumors, the networks, biology..
TECNOLOGY: In this branch we can use maths to do somethings too: internet and construccion.. and use it for a lot of applications
1) What will be the main activity (in general) of this new center?
I think that the main activity will be studying and investigating of maths models that reproduces technology, science…
2) Which topics does he mention where Maths can be applied?
It says that maths can be applied to lots of things like aircraft design, finding oil, clean soil and detect tumors. But I think that they ca be applied to more things.
3) Which three specific branches will be studied in?
I think that this are the branches that will be studied:
1. Technology: To improove and to make the internet better.
2. Science: To detect tumors and fine medicines for any illness.
3. Nature: To find solutions about the climate, the pollution of the water…
