Hi!
You know that when you write a composition I always tell you to use connectors or linkers. They help us have a better writing, well organised ideas and a well structured text.
Most of you sometimes get c
onfused with these 2 linkers: Although (encara que) and However (malgrat tot).
Here, some info about their use and position:
The Two Correct Ways
1. In the MIDDLE of a sentence:
We decided not to wear our jackets when we went for a walk, although the weather was rather chilly.
2. At the BEGINNING of a sentence:
Although the weather was rather chilly, we decided not to wear our jackets when we went for a walk.
The Wrong Way Do NOT use Although as the first word of a sentence with a comma after it and a period after the although part. This will make a fragment sentence, which is a serious mistake.
We decided not to wear our jackets when we went for a walk. Although, it was rather chilly outside.
Although vs. However A better way to write the above sentence would be to use the word However instead of Although.
We decided not to wear our jackets when we went for a walk. However, it was rather chilly outside.
In other words, the word although is NOT the same as however. The word However is able to stand at the beginning of its own sentence and should be followed by a comma. (See sample immediately above.) The word although CANNOT do that.
So you guys, I hope netx time you’ll use them properly, ok?
