Every student in England knows this date.

What date does every student in Spain know, apart from their birthday?

Why is the battle so important?

When the invading Normans defeated the Anglo-Saxons many things changed in England:

1. The official language became French (for 300 years!)

2. Latin words flooded the English language

3. The Normans brought castle building and the Romanesque style of architecture

4. They also brought cavalry to England, before the Anglo-Saxons only fought on foot with axes

5. The Norman legacy saw England invade Ireland for the first time and many of the later conflicts between England and France, that lasted centuries, began as a result of England now possessing lands in France, principally in Normandy.

Here’s the question, which every history student in the UK knows the answer to:

How did King Harold, the last Anglo-Saxon King, die?
