EGYPT AND THE NILE

We are studying the Nile, what it did for the Ancient Egyptians and why all the ancient villages were on the banks of the river.

It was very important for the devolpment of Ancient Egypt because it provided water to them for irrigation, drinking and bathing. They used a shadoof (a pole with a bucket at one end) used for raising water from the Nile.

It also gave them food, transportation and excellent soil for growing food.

Papyrus grew along the Nile so the Egyptians made materials for buildings from papyrus

The Nile starts in Burundi and the mouth of the river is in Egypt.

The Nile flooded every year from July to October and Ancient Egyptians developed algebra, geometry and astronomy to control the floods.

Egypt wasn’t the only ancient civilization that was next to a river like the Mesopotamian, Indian or Chinese ones. All these ancient civilizations are called river civilizations.
