FILM 1 “BILLY ELLIOT”
Billy Elliot is the story of a boy from a coal mining family who decides to be a ballet dancer. His decision causes, perhaps predictably, a great deal of family controversy.

Plot Outline – Billy Elliot
The structure of the plot is in chronological order: order in which events happened.
One flashback: when mum died.
- Setting – Time- 1984, Place- England, County Durham, Political – miners striking for better working conditions.
- 11 year old Billy – lives with dad (Jacky), older brother Tony (both coal miners) and nana who is losing her memory. Mum has died.
- Money is tight. Miners are striking for better pay and conditions. No work = no pay
- Billy goes to boxing lessons weekly but is not good at it.
- Billy sees a ballet class at the hall and is asked to join in by Mrs Wilkinson (ballet teacher)
- Billy shows talent and goes secretly to lessons. He knows his dad would not approve. Not a masculine hobby.
- Dad finds out about ballet and forbids Billy to dance. Ballet is for girls. (conflict in values and expectations)
- Billy defies dad and keeps going. Mrs W thinks he can make the Royal Ballet school (passion) Billy misses his audition for the Royal Ballet school because Tony (brother) gets arrested.
- Ballet teacher tries to convince dad to let Billy try out.
- Billy breaks into the school hall and dances. Dad sees how good he is and decides to let him go to London for an audition.
- Dad is prepared to break the miners’ strike to earn money for the trip to London (sacrifice)
- Instead other striking miners help raise money for bus trip to London.
- Billy’s friend Michael has been hiding his true identity throughout the years. Michael is gay and he admits this to Billy. Identity and individuality: Being comfortable in your own skin & following your own dreams and passions are key ideas.
- Despite a bad audition and a punch up in the changing rooms, Billy is offered a place at the ballet school.
- 15 years later- dad and Tony travel to see Billy dance in Swan Lake. Has Billy evolved from the awkward duck into a swan??
