Jazz concert in Barcelona

On Monday 14th of November the students of 1st of Baccalaureate of INS Isaac Albéniz went to can Fabra library, in Barcelona, to attend a jazz event offered by a band from New York.

In the jazz event there were four musicians: a flute, a piano,  a cello and a drums player.

They explained us how they improvise with their instruments, and they also explained the difference between jazz and classical music answering the questions we had prepaired beforehand .

Finally they played some beautiful pieces of jazz for us, showing how Brazilian or Indian music can influence jazz.

SANT JORDI 2015-16. Totes les llengües clamen per la lectura, hàbit i plaer

Enguany hem volgut renovar i dinamitzar la celebració de Sant Jordi al centre. El nostre compromís amb les llengües i amb la lectura és cada vegada més ferm. Per aquest motiu ens va semblar una bona iniciativa reprendre l’activitat que, anys enrere, s’havia organitzat a l’institut per festejar aquesta jornada. Es tractava d’un intercanvi, no comercial, de llibres i productes culturals (CD’s, DVD’s). Per tal de consolidar la proposta, vam donar-li un format seriós. El primer pas va ser preparar tiquets d’intercanvi, similars als que usem per a d’altres festivitats en què l’alumnat munta paradetes per guanyar diners que han de subvencionar, en part, algun viatge de curs. Ara, però, es tractava de fer arrelar la idea que cada llibre (o equivalent) donava dret a triar-ne un altre d’entre els que s’havien recollit en les setmanes prèvies. Tot un esforç d’organització i de col·laboració.

L’alumnat del grup 1.2, el batxillerat humanístic, en va assumir la responsabilitat. A ells correspongué la gestió dels tiquets d’intercanvi; i la tasca de recollir i ordenar el material de les paradetes. Encara hi van afegir una proposta del tot original: la difusió i propaganda de l’activitat.

Ja hem dit aquesta que pivotava sobre la lectura, veritable motor de propulsió de tota la festivitat i, naturalment, de la nostra activitat docent, del projecte educatiu del centre. Lectura per a la festa i per a la feina; lectura per a la descoberta i per a la reflexió; lectura alè de vida, mà estesa, bastó de caminant sempre en marxa.

Doncs bé, aquest reclam no podia ser dit només en una llengua, la vehicular; ni en dues, les majoritàries; havíem de proclamar-ho amb totes les veus que conflueixen a les nostres aules. I vam optar per visibilitzar el multilingüisme que, de mica en mica, però amb fermesa, arrela en el centre.

Per corroborar-ho, feu una ullada als rètols que va concebre i va realitzar un grup d’alumnes de l’1.2. Tota una mostra de la il·lusió i el convenciment amb què volem implementar l’experiència multilingüe en el nostre aprenentatge diari, el dels que estudien i el dels que ensenyen. I és que, davant dels mots que ens interpel·len,  tots som sempre aprenents.

Presentació multilingüe

Noi sentiamo grande gioia di concorrere in questo spazio plurilingue que emmarca, com un vestit fet a mida, les activitats que despleguem des de fa temps en la franja de matèries optatives del centre. Notre source inspiratrice c’est la ferme conviction que les langues –qu’elles soient voisines, parentes ou seulement connues- sont une voie de communication que ensancha nuestro campo de aprendizaje. Per això, la paràbola i la iconografia de la Torre de Babel identifica la nostra tasca. Nós queremos converter á condenaçao de Deus para a soberba dos homens en puerta abierta a la comprensión: de los otros y de nosotros mismos. Cada punt d’interrogacion qu’òbri una lenga estranha es un camin que espera ser trepitjat per aquells que ens sabem pedites in itenere, sovint erràtics, però rics de la saviesa del camí.

Oi que no costa tan d’entendre, aquest refregit de llengües germanes i la seva mare, la llengua llatina? Doncs, convençuts d’això, els nostres alumnes de l’optativa d’intercomprensió lingüística romànica ja porten set publicacions de la seva Torre de Babel particular. Isaac Song visits our school

Here at Isaac Albeniz High School we recently had a special visit from a guest named Isaac Song. He is an American student who is here studying organ donation in Spain representing the Fulbright program.

Fulbright is a competitive program of grants that is aimed at enabling students, teachers, professionals, etc. to travel abroad for educational purposes. This could be studying, conducting research and so on.

During the tutoring hour he gave a very interesting speech in English to the Batxillerat students which had two parts. Firstly he introduced himself and spoke about his life back in New York. Afterwards he told the students about the Fulbright program he represents and spoke about organ donation, the subject he is studying, and informed the students that the organ donation system in Spain is one of the best in the world!

Following his presentation with the Batxillerat students, we met in the management office over the break time and had something to eat and drink. During this time we had a conversation with Isaac and some of the teachers who are involved in the plurilingual programme and some English teachers too. Isaac and I shared our experiences about living here in Spain and compared the differences between what he is doing and what I am doing. It was interesting to hear about his studies and the work he is doing with regards to organ donation and the Fulbright program.

I think this visit from Isaac was a great opportunity for our Batxillerat students! It´s so important for our students to meet young people from other countries and hear about their lives and experiences. This was also such a useful experience for our students as it gave them the chance to listen to a different English accent. There are so many different English accents and it is important not to get used to one as the next English-speaking person you speak to is likely to speak differently! I hope that  after meeting Isaac Song, our students will be encouraged to think about travelling abroad to study or work as it´s such a brilliant experience and a great chance to practise your language skills!

Study and dissection of a lamb heart

The practice of dissection of a lamb heart consists of two parts. The first deals with the study of externally heart and the second deals with the study of the heart inside.
The first thing we had to do was put the heart on a platter and once there, put a color straws for veins and other color straws for artheries.
And in the first part, the first thing we did was examine the appearance of the pericardium with the tweezers, which is a transparent, hard and resistant layer. All continued, we note that the same heart has a conical shape with a size equivalent to a fist. And finally we explore the veins and arteries that are externally.
And the second part takes place the dissection with the help of the scissors. First we had to make a cut in the left ventricle for inspection. And secondly we did the same in the right ventricle.
And finally we had to take a conclusion. In our case, we explained that the dissected heart is not symmetrical as the left ventricle is larger than the right to carry blood through the heart and comply its function.
