Institut Isaac Albéniz in Badalona

What does GEPster mean? Is it a mistake for Hipster? Not really…. This is a GEPster space because it was created in 2016 from a GEP (Grup Experimental Plurilingüe) programme.
Isaac Albéniz is a high school located in Badalona, a city near Barcelona, with a clear plurilingual vocation. We wish that our students are not afraid to use foreign languages as a tool to interact and communicate ith people from other countries, whatever the purpose is: academic, professional, family…

Our goal is that our students learn English and French and, in particular, that they improve their speaking skills in these languages. The GEP is a programme that was put in place to encourage plurilingualism in the Catalan education system. To achieve this, the GEP programme treats English as an instrument in the classroom rather than a subject. So certain classes in our high school are taught in English, rather than Catalan or Spanish. The aim is to use English outside of English classes. By doing this, our students can improve their English while learning other subjects.

My name is Amy and I’m the conversation assistant here at Isaac Albéniz high school. My role is to help out in the classes that are taught in English and encourage the students to communicate in English. The subjects that have lessons taught in English here are science, technology and entrepreneurship/economics. I applied for this position through the British Council when I was back in the UK. The British Council then connected me up with the Ministry of Education here in Spain who allocated me a position in a school in the region of my choice, Catalonia. I am 21 years old and I´m a student at the University of Southampton, in the south of England. I study French and Spanish and as part of my degree I must spend one year living in a French or Spanish speaking country.

In the future, anything to do with plurilingualism will be collected here on the GEPsters blog. So you will be able to find articles about plurilingual activities and so on here. We hope that there will be lots of articles for you to read! 😀
