THE 80’s in Great Britain

 The Young Ones

One of the greatest 80’s TV comedies.  Students Rick, Neil, Vyvyan and Mike live in a students’ flat. Their humour can be labelled as extreme, ridiculous and very revolutionary. It has probably been one of the most enjoyable  shows of the time.

The Young Ones started life as a bunch of British stand up comedians who were working on an ‘alternative comedy’ movement. Some of them were already beginning to turn up on television shows like Boom Boom…Out Go The Lights and a few other small productions.

Rik Mayall played Rik, a pompous, radical wannabe. Ade Edmondson portrayed heavy metal freak Vivian. Then there was Nigel, hippy “Neil” and finally, Mike a slightly mysterious and overwhelmingly ‘normal’ character played by Christopher Ryan. Alexi Sayle also appeared regularly as their Russian landlord Jerzy Balowski.

Rik Mayall, Lisa Mayer and Ben Elton wrote the scripts. Like most great British comedies, The Young Ones certainly owes a lot to Monty Python, but rather than coping its content, it used the Python style to take the sit-com in a whole new direction.

    Hi Gemma!

Today we’ve seen an episode of “The Young Ones”. I thought it would makes me laugh more but now that I’ve seen it I think it’s more stupid than funny, but when you are seeing all these stupid things that the characters do, you finally laugh because of these fool situations all together.

Well I think that’s more than a funny show or whatever like this, I think it had to be a revolution in the 80s because it laughs at everything and makes parodies.

I hope my arguments are good.

    See you on wednesday!

    Hello Gemma.
    How are you?
I’m liked very much the episode that we watched about The Young Ones. I tihnk that they are funny and stupid. I believe that it is a series that they would have to emit at the moment by the TV.
The Young Ones are a very special people.
I believe that the creators had much imagination.

    Bye Gemma.

    Hiri Gemma!!

In my opinion, the tv show “The Young Ones” is very funny, but not only for stupid situations that the characters live, but because they make an intelligent humour, parodies and criticism about the taboo subject that in that time the people had to accept. So, this comedian starts a new kind of tv shows at eighties.

A part from that, it was dificult for me to understand what the charcters were talking. I think Rick and Vivian were the characters that I understood the most.

    I enjoyed that class.
    See you soon,

    Hi Gemma!
    What’s up?

I think that the episode that we watched in English class, is very stupid but we all laughed with that situations and the crazy personage of “The young Ones”. Nowadays, only a one serie with this characterisc, it’s Polonia, however it tells people about our politicians of the moment.

But in the 80s, probably it was a revolutionary serie, and it was a very famous on the tv world.

What else? Mm.. That class I enjoyed because was a different class, and I think that it served to relax after our exams. Thank you!

We should do more classes like that ^^

    See you soon on Wednesday!

I don’t like a lot the episode of The young ones, because their humor are very stupid and they don’t make me laugh. Their English are difficult in some time but I can understand.
