Oliver Twist: Chapter 2

Oliver at Mr Sowerberry’s

SUMMARY

Oliver is sent to work in a shop. He works for Mr Sowerberry. The first night Oliver slept in a room full of coffins. He was afraid and all alone in a strange place. He had no friends.

The next day he met a boy called Noah, who became his enemy. Mr Sowerberry gave Oliver a special black hat and dark jacket. Oliver became a mourner at many funerals.

One day he hit Noah and Noah told everyone that he tried to kill him. Mr Sowerberry was very angry and put Oliver in a dark room. Oliver wasn’t afraid when Mr Bumble came. Mr Bumble told them to stop giving him meat. That night Oliver fell to the floor and cried all night.

Early the next morning he put a few clothes in a handkerchief and he quietly left Mr Sowerberry’s shop.
