The curious incident of the dog in the night-time

The book I’ve just read is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, It’s a bestselling novel written by Mark Haddon.

It tells the story of Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old boy who has behavioral difficulties because of Asperger syndrome. He has unusual mental abilities and he is a lot smarter than the other kids. He also has no empathy for other people. He lives with his father, her mother died, or that’s what his father says. Christopher is obsessed with Maths and he will be taking his A levels this year.

The book talks about a murdered dog in a backyard and how Christopher solves the case turning himself into a detective. His father is not really happy about that and tries to stop him. Christopher’s best friend is a rat who will be with him the whole story. Christopher will discover more than he expected.

I don’t want to spoil the book so I’ll finish here. I would really recommend this book to those who like mystery stories.

The girl on the train by Paula Hawkins

The Girl on the train by Paula Hawkins

I chose this book because when I read the blurb I felt very interested in knowing what the girl was seeing from the train.

“My head leaning against the carriage window, I watch these houses roll past me like a tracking shot in a film. I see them as others do not; even their owners probably don’t see them from this perspective. Twice a day, I am offered a view into other lives, just for a moment. There’s something comforting about the sight of strangers safe at home.”

It is not what I expected but it is not bad. At the beginning it is rather heavy going and In my opinion the best part of the book is from half ahead when you have to figure out what is true and what is fiction, and finally it gripped me.

I recommend it to those who like complex thriller, with violence, alcohol, characters mentally unstable and jealousy.

Pride and prejudice by Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin

This is a novel written by Jane Austen(December 1775 – 18 July 1817), an English novelist whose plots often were about dependence of women on marriage in order to achieve a favourable social standing and economic security.

She is known for six major novels “Sense and sensibility, Mandsfield Park, Emma, Northander Abbey, Persuassion and Pride and prejudice”

This is a romantic, fun and very entertaining novel which I was delighted to read.

Set in the early 1800´s it gives us a background of that time.

One of the famous quote is:

It is a truth universally acknowledge, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”

This lines reflects the essential aspiration of middle and upper class families in England in the late 18th century, when the marriage was the first aspiration for women.

The book tells us the story of five sisters(all with very different character)  whose mother only thinks on the importance to have all of them well-married, and throughout the book we find love, disapointments, misunderstandings and reconciliations.

In my opinion Jane Austen’s books are mainly written for women and for those who like romantic novels.

CITY OF ILLUSIONS.

CITY OF ILLUSIONS
Ursula Le Guin

I chose this book, firstly, for the name, but then I read the title of “modern women writers” and I knew that I had to read it, for the importance to support those girls who had fought for women’s rights at the time when it was imposible to do something in a woman’s name.

I enjoyed the book because it is a gripping story which happens in a different version of Earth, with people, aliens and some mind-power. The intriguing plot is about the pursuit of the truth about Falk’s origin.
I was surprised by the easy going narration although it was difficult to read because there was plenty of new and different vocabulary. Also the fact that sometimes has heavy-going parts.

I recommend it to the open-minds who like to read about different worlds, different systems, different ways of behaviour. Therefore I recommend the book and the writer to those who like the science fiction genre.

I’ve chosen these words from the book:
Will those who speak no truth tell me the truth for the asking? And how will I recognize what I seek when I find it?… I cling to the notion, my son, that in you lies some hope for man. I do not like to give up that notion. But only you can seek your own truth; and if it seem to you that your way ends here, then that, perhaps, is the truth.”

The Rosie Effect

The Rosie Effect

Graeme Simsion

This is a funny and easy reading book that is the sequel of a previous one entitled The Rossie Project. Having finally married Rossie, Don Tilman, the main character, is going to face a new challenge:  his near fatherhood.  Although this fact could be very stressful for everyone, it is especially upsetting for Tom, because of his “unconventional” way of thinking and his difficulties with  human relationships.  By doing a lot of different approaches to the babies world, and getting the same amount of failures, we can discover with Tom that there are many ways to feel the love and to take care of the others.

I really like having read this book and, not wanting to make you an spoiler, because I’m sure you will read it, I only share this little passage with you:

“Rosie raised her glass as if proposing a toast. This turned out to be exactly what she was doing.

‘We’ve got something to celebrate, Captain,’ she said.

She looked at me for a few seconds. She knows that I am not fond of surprises. I assumed that she had achieved some important milestone with her thesis. Or perhaps she had been offered a place in the psychiatry-training program on completion of the medical course. This would be extremely good news, and I estimated the probability of sex at greater than ninety per cent.

She smiled—then, presumably to increase the suspense, drank from her glass. Disaster! It was as if it contained poison. 18 She spat it out, over her white dress, and ran to the bathroom. I followed her as she removed the dress and ran water over it. Standing in her half-purple underwear, pumping water in and out of the dress, she turned back to me. Her expression was far too complex to analyse.

‘We’re pregnant,’ she said.”
