CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

The “Charlie and the chocolate factory” is children’s novel. It was written by Roald Dahl and was published in 1964.  It’s about  a little poor boy named Charlie who has great admiration and curiosity by the mistery of the chocolate factory , and an excentric character named Willy Wonka, the owner of a mysterious chocolate factory and the greatest inventor of sweets in the world.

The main characters are Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket and four more children. One day, Wonka decided open the doors of your factory to the lucky 5 children who find the 5 golden tickets hidden inside five chocolates. Charlie is one of the 5 lucky children, although he can only eat chocolates once a year, for his birthday. The other lucky ones are : August Gloop (the first to find his Golden ticket), who shows the greed and the baseness moral; Veruca Salt, a bad gal girl; Violet Beauregarde, a young woman obsessed with chewing gum; Mike Tevé, a little boy who hates the chocolate and has a derogatoy attitude.

In general, I love fantastic novels and this one is. In addition to, I like  that these novels transmit a message and values. In this case, the writer finally emphasizes the only child who doesn’t succumb to vanity, consumerism, whimsical or competitiveness.

“Me Before you” – Sara Rendón –

Me before you

Have you ever thought that love can be the reason to live? Never? So, you don’t know the love story of Louisa Clark and Will Traynor in “Me before you”.

Louisa Clark is the female protagonist of the book. She’s a 26 years old girl from a humble family, who has her life, practically, resolved. She works in a coffee shop called The Buttered Bun and has been dating for several years with Patrick, her boyfriend, who is an athlete.

On the other hand, the male protagonist is Will Traynor, a young businessman who became paraplegic after an accident. This accident will leave an important mark in his life that will change everything, even his vision of life. After that, he loses the desire to live and he becomes a pessimist and selfish person.

The story of our characters begins when, Louisa, loses her job in the cafeteria due to the closure of the same. Her family is going through an unstable economic moment and, therefore, they need the eldest of the daughters to help with household expenses. For this reason, Louisa, decides to work for a rich family who needs a special caregiver.

Contrary to the first impression between the two, their connection was brief and inevitable. Louisa, with her explosive and colorful personality, captivates the cold and dead heart of Will. Together, they overcome the adversities that life presents to them.

From the first moment, I have lived this story as if it were mine. The author, through her simple writing, has been able to convey the feelings of each of the characters.

Finally, I recommend reading this book for the message it transmits. We have to learn to confront life with or without its adversities, and live it to the fullest from the minute 0 to the end because we have one opportunity to enjoy it.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a story about two very different children (one is the son of a Nazi commander, and the other is a jew in a concentration camp) who make friends but they are unlucky. Written by John Boyne and published in 2006.

The novel is narrated from the perspective of nine-year-old Bruno, the son of a Nazi commander.

When Bruno arrives home, he sees his family packing things and discovers that they are moving to Out-With and that he will have to leave his friends in Berlin. In Out-With, he finds himself alone by the lack of children and decides to go to visit the people behind the fence the place that Bruno can see from his bedroom window (the concentration camp that Bruno thinks is a farm); after a good time walking he finds Schmuel and they make friends, and all of days he goes to play with him. One day, Bruno finds Schmuel serving in his house, Schmuel asks him to eat, Bruno gives him but  Koter (a Nazi soldier) catches Shmuel eating and accuses him of stealing and Bruno did not do anything to deny it. The next day Schmuel asks Bruno for help to find his father. One day Schmuel gives him a suit like his to Bruno and passes the fence digging a hole with a shovel. Bruno decides go home, but it’s too late.

The guys are in line with hundreds of other prisoners and are sent to death in a gas chamber. Bruno’s family searches for several days until a Nazi soldier finds a pile of clothes near the hole in the fence. Finally, Bruno’s mother returned to Berlin with Gretel and Bruno’s father disappeared with a group of fellow soldiers.

The book is easy to read and is interesting because it explains how was the son of a Nazi commander life and how it was that of the Jews at that time. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 10.

REVIEW OF WONDER

Wonder tells the history of a child called August, who lives a non common reality.

He was born with the deformed face. Since then he has suffered many surgery. He lives happily with his parents and an older a totally healthy sister. Although his parents had been strongly care, about him and her mother has taken charge of his education, one day, they decided August must carry on his education at the school. Their parents wanted August was able to be in a real life, as any ten years child, despite being difficult at the beginning.

At first, August felt afraid to go school; because of comments, jokes, teasing children could say to him. He meet great friends, Jack and Summer, who will be very close to August and will be a big support to him in front of the bad treat of other children, because of their appearance. The read shows as August as a brave child who understands people look at him scared o uncomfortable, but he don’t get angry. And the end he manages to have a good relationship with the children of the school.

One thing interesting from de book, is that the book was wrote in the first person but, not only form August, from Via, the August’ sister, Julius, the Via’s boyfriend,…. and that aspect do that the description of the situation, the point of the reader, become more real, full of different emotions  and more objective.

I like the character of Via, because it is a protective with August, but he feels the consequence to be absolutely focus in care of August, because when he born she was a little child and her parents don’t pay all the attention that she needed.

For me to read the book has been hard. But I recommend it, because it teaches people don’t judge people for the appearance, the most important is to now the real personality.

Review of Paper Towns

Paper Towns is about a story that starts with two characters; Quentin ‘Q’ Jacobsen and Margo Roth Spiegelman. Their lives and paths where completely different, but all changed when one day she appeared in his bedroom in the middle of the night asking him for help to join her on a mission of revenge.
Our protagonists spend all night in an adventure doing what she planned; getting revenge on his friends and her ex-boyfriend for cheating.

Margo has always been Quentin’s crush, furthermore she was his neighbour but he never had the chance to talk with her because they were opposite poles, he was shy and introverted and she was one of the most popular girls in their school.
The morning after Margo didn’t go at school, the days were passing by and Quentin was everyday more worried until one day he found one clue of her, that lead him to other clues and he came to the conclusion that she wanted him to go for her. In the research, two friends of Quentin, one friend of Margo and a detective join him to find her location.

At the end of the story they find her. Quentin and his friends go to a trip to Agloe, New York where they find Margo and she explains to Quentin that she wasn’t leaving clews to be searched but to leave signals of life. She also proposes to Quentin to stay with her in the Paper Town but he refuses her proposition because he tells her he has a life in Florida.
They finally kiss and say their last goodbye, Quentin leaves the town with his friends.

In my opinion, the book was interesting, I like the relation between the two protagonists but I hate how the story ends because it is all about how he searches for Margo and at the end she refuses him, making the plot twist so forced and sad, leaving the reader so disappointed and unhappy.
To sum up, I liked so much the story and the argument but the end was so surprisingly disappointing.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- time by Mark Haddon

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- time is a fantastic novel by Mark Haddon, published in 2003 and awarded with the Whitbread Novel of the Year, among others.

The story is about a 15-year-old boy called Christopher Boone who has Asperger’s Syndrome, but the book doesn’t give us this information. It’s a data that you discover meanwhile you read the book.  He lives in Swindon with his father and his pet, a rat called Toby.  He hates yellow and brown colours, for example, he has the theory that if he sees four yellow cars in a row made, from that moment it will be a Black Day.

One day, Christopher found out his neighbour’s dog had been murdered. So, he decided to investigate about that incident, because he is very curious about all the things that happen around him. During his investigation, he discovered a box of letters from his mum in his dad’s bedroom. At this point, he realises that his father had been lying him about her mum, because he told him that his mum was dead.

After this, he found out who actually killed the dog. Whit the mystery solved, he decided to search for his mum who lives in London.  Afterward some adventures, he arrived at his mother’s house and explained to her what had happened and that he thought she was dead, and why he had frightened from his dad.  Despite his parent’s arguments over Christopher, his mum and Christopher decided to come back to Swindon. Once there, Christopher took the A–level in maths and his relationship with his dad was slowly restored.

The novel ends when Christopher is planning to take more A-level exams in physics and further maths to be possible to attend to the university. He knows that he can do all of this because he solved the dog’s mystery, he went to London alone and wrote a book.

I think it is a brilliant book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery, because it surprises me the way that the book change the way of the story. Moreover, it teaches you how someone can do all the things that proposes himself and how is the life with Asperger’s Syndrome.
