ALISSA de C. J. Moore

  1. Resum

Each month, the shop owner gives the girls a little money. Alissa buys a book with her money. She reads the book after lunch.

The shop owner is surprised.  The other girls can’t read.

“Can you write? Can you count? The shop owner asks.

“Yes, I can”, Alissa says.

“Come”, the shop owner says, “You are going to work in the shop”.

“So you want to marry my daughter?” the old woman said. Her voice was hard.

Paul looked at her bravely. “Yes, “ he said. “I love Maria and I want to woman laughed.

The old woman laughed.

“You! A poor student! No money, no father, nothing! My daughter will never marry you”

Paul said nothing. He looked at Maria. She did not look at him.

“I am poor now”, he said, “But one day I’ll be a famous writer”.

The old woman laughed again. “No,” she said. “My daughter is not for you. She is going to be married soon. You will never see her again”.

The Rosie Effect

The Rosie Effect

Graeme Simsion

This is a funny and easy reading book that is the sequel of a previous one entitled The Rossie Project. Having finally married Rossie, Don Tilman, the main character, is going to face a new challenge:  his near fatherhood.  Although this fact could be very stressful for everyone, it is especially upsetting for Tom, because of his “unconventional” way of thinking and his difficulties with  human relationships.  By doing a lot of different approaches to the babies world, and getting the same amount of failures, we can discover with Tom that there are many ways to feel the love and to take care of the others.

I really like having read this book and, not wanting to make you an spoiler, because I’m sure you will read it, I only share this little passage with you:

“Rosie raised her glass as if proposing a toast. This turned out to be exactly what she was doing.

‘We’ve got something to celebrate, Captain,’ she said.

She looked at me for a few seconds. She knows that I am not fond of surprises. I assumed that she had achieved some important milestone with her thesis. Or perhaps she had been offered a place in the psychiatry-training program on completion of the medical course. This would be extremely good news, and I estimated the probability of sex at greater than ninety per cent.

She smiled—then, presumably to increase the suspense, drank from her glass. Disaster! It was as if it contained poison. 18 She spat it out, over her white dress, and ran to the bathroom. I followed her as she removed the dress and ran water over it. Standing in her half-purple underwear, pumping water in and out of the dress, she turned back to me. Her expression was far too complex to analyse.

‘We’re pregnant,’ she said.”
