THE MARTIAN

optimized-martian-gallery5-gallery-image

Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian is a breathtaking film. It features Matt Damon as the main character where he portrays astronaut Mark Watney.  In this sci-fi fantasy, which is set on Mars, the human race has developed the technology to explore the red planet.

During a manned mission to Mars, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself alone on the hostile planet. With only few supplies, he must draw upon his intelligence, botanical knowledge and faith to subsist and find a way to establish contact with Earth to tell the world he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring Watney home, while his crewmates under the orders of commander Melissa Lewis “Jessica Chastain” plot an almost impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world come together to pray for Watney’s safe return.

The film is very entertaining leading the audience through an emotional journey. Usually movies in this genre can be quite generic but The Martian is a very fresh take. It was at times both bleak and intense, and yet somehow still managed to provide comedic relief. The acting was superb and a lot of the scenes of the sparse terrain of Mars really helped the audience empathise with the main character’s loneliness.

LEICESTER’S PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE

In the past few years, the town of Leicester has been a modest city from central Britain with a second division football team, until things started to change. Their football team no longer can be classified as a mid table mediocre team but as a Premiere League winner. Last season Leicester’s “Foxes” won the tournament going against all predictions, which led to unimaginable bets taking place.

For instance, a Hampshire man placed a five-pound bet for Leicester after watching the first match against Sunderland. When the 2015 Premiere League finished, he ended up with 7500£ in his pocket due to his determination. The biggest bet was of 75£ when the odds were 1500/1 he won more than 110.000£. As a result of the odds the betting industry lost more than 20 million.

Expert of the industry like Jessica Bridge from Ladbrokes (British betting company) stated: ”We’ve been in this game for 130 years and we’ve never seen anything like this, it’s a story for the romantics and whilst it’s going to cost us a few quid, we have to thank Claudio Ranieri and his team for upsetting the odds week in, week out over the last nine months”.

Leicester city went against all predictions proving that the impossible can happen. This demonstrates that a low-table team can always surprise all of us.

IPHONE 7 REVIEW

IPHONE 7 REVIEW:

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are very unusual devices. They are full of aggressive breaks from convention while wrapped in cases that look almost exactly like their two direct predecessors.

Inside that case, everything else about the iPhone 7 is a decisive statement about the future. The dual cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus are proof of the new era in mobile photography. The iconic iPhone home button is no longer a physical button, but instead a sophisticated ballet of pressure sensors and haptic vibration motors that simulate the feel of a button. The new A10 Fusion processor blends two high-power cores that rival laptop performance with two low-power cores that combine with a much larger battery to extend running time by up to two hours.

And, yes, Apple has removed the headphone jack.

Removing the headphone jack is an act of pure confidence from Apple, which is the only company in tech that can set off a sea change in the industry by aggressively dropping various technologies from its products. Apple decides that it’s time to move on, and it has a massive base of customers that love and trust the company who make it happen. And now it’s decided that the headphone jack is over.

After carry out extensive research, it’s clear to me that Apple has considered opinions about how the next generation of phones should fit into our lives. But it’s also clear that the iPhone 7 is a transitional step into the future.

La Raíz, Oques Grasses, Berri Txarrak, Ebri Knight and the orchestra Di-Versiones will be some of the groups participating in la Copa during the Fires de Sant Narcís in Girona, which will take place from October 28 to November 6.

Fires de Sant Narcís are a part of the festa major of Girona. A festa major is usually dedicated to a saint or virgin, who is the patron of whichever city holds the festa. In Girona’s case: Sant Narcís.

In addition, the Council remains committed to decentralize the concerts and take them to different parts of the city. Moreover, on November 4 there will be the Girona Grand Parade, which will include the participation of the Girona Marxing Band, Big Band Empordà Bufant Fort and Balkan Paradise Orchestra. This time they will not begin their routes separately, but they will come together to Plaça de Sant Feliu, where they will end the concert.

Furthermore, there will be the traditional Sardana dancing and performances by La Principal de la Bisbal and el Cor Maragall in the Auditorium. On November 1st, there will be the Sardana dance contest in the square Calvet i Rubalcaba.

Finally, the Councillor for Promotion of the Territory, Eva Palau, explained that the City Council has committed to quality, both with established and emerging groups; to reach out to the public as much as possible.

RSC Sant Cugat 2016: The magic of EYP

The past 5th of February the 2nd regional selection conference in Sant Cugat started. The session lasted a whole weekend, where the delegates were able to learn and discuss about the current events involving the European Union.

On Friday 5th, the officials met in Sant Cugat to get to know each other. After they had lunch they practised Teambuilding and did committee work, so everything worked smoothly during the session. The next day, the delegates were grouped in committees and started their own Teambuilding so they got to know each other better. Afterwards, each delegate got to delve into each correspondent issue.

Maddy Tavenier & Alan Carr

I started by finding a clip that I would like to show in class. I chose a clip of Alan Carr as I believed it had very good vocabulary and because of its content.

The worksheet was not difficult to create, as finding questions for the listening activity was pretty straightforward and the clip included a good amount of vocabulary for the first activity. Although, it was not easy to write the questions so that they were not ambiguous or misunderstood.

As for the lesson, I believe it went well considering I had never done an activity like this before. I was not nervous, which did help but I did notice that there was a bit more time and could have done one more exercise.

From this experience I have learnt that I have to be careful with the way I answer students when correcting the answers, as I should give them more praise. Also, I believe I should be more aware of the time I have and therefore I should use it completely so that there is not a point where the students do not have anything to do.

In regards to the planning of the worksheet, I personally tried to design simple exercises that would not require too much effort for students to resolve but would still be just as effective in its didactic function. This way, I would not overwhelm students with a lot of work and instead would let them focus in more detail on the tasks they had to do.

In what concerns the posterior creation of the sheet, I kept the style minimalistic in nature and complemented it with a touch of colour and a clear, numbered structure.

As for the lesson itself, I experienced a certain difficulty in trying to organise the class. I had to repeat the clip because some people had not clearly understood what to do due to my lacklustre instructions and I also felt there was a lack of connection and interaction whilst my students completed the sheet as I did not exactly know how to help them and, therefore, awaited for them to finish silently.

I have learnt that it is very hard to organise and control the situation of a lesson, due to the varied levels of collaboration and motivation coming from the students, and that the connection between student and teacher is vital for a lesson to continue properly.
