THE MARTIAN

Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian is a breathtaking film. It features Matt Damon as the main character where he portrays astronaut Mark Watney.  In this sci-fi fantasy, which is set on Mars, the human race has developed the technology to explore the red planet.

During a manned mission to Mars, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself alone on the hostile planet. With only few supplies, he must draw upon his intelligence, botanical knowledge and faith to subsist and find a way to establish contact with Earth to tell the world he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring Watney home, while his crewmates under the orders of commander Melissa Lewis “Jessica Chastain” plot an almost impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world come together to pray for Watney’s safe return.

The film is very entertaining leading the audience through an emotional journey. Usually movies in this genre can be quite generic but The Martian is a very fresh take. It was at times both bleak and intense, and yet somehow still managed to provide comedic relief. The acting was superb and a lot of the scenes of the sparse terrain of Mars really helped the audience empathise with the main character’s loneliness.

Based on the novel by Drew Goddard and Andy Weir, The Martian is a captivating movie about an astronaut, named Mark Watney (Matt Damon) who is left on a hostile planet after a severe dust storm nearly kills his entire crew on a manned mission to Mars. As Mark Watney is pierced by flying debris and is unable to return for the launch back to Earth, the crew assumes his death. Without the crew knowing, Mark Watney survives and is forced to embrace various survival methods using applications of math, science and botany. Afterwards he finds an ingenious way to communicate with NASA experts such as Vincent Kapoor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels) and the world. As food and water supplies are set to be exhausted far before the next scheduled mission four years away, the stranded astronaut counts the Mars “sol” days before his predicted death and is determined to fight to live.

The Martian is a gripping and tense survival film of entrapment and escape, which is suitable for all people and will have you intrigued and biting your nails. It incorporates the humour of an astronaut stranded and alone, at a tremendous 55 millions of km away from home. 8 out of 10 for Riddley Scott’s The Martian.

THE MARTIAN

ddaaDuring a manned mission to planet Mars, astronaut Mark Watney, played by the gifted Matt Damon, is believed to be dead after a fierce Martian storm and is left behind by his crew. Not long after, the audience is shockingly surprised to find out that Watney has survived, and is alone on the hostile red planet. However, life on Mars comes with its difficulties: the astronaut has meagre supplies so he is forced to make use of his botanical studies to subsist. Afterwards, he finds a way to communicate with his fellow colleagues at NASA and signal that he’s alive. On Earth, thankfully, international experts from USA and China work together to bring “the Martian” home safe and sound.

Mark Watney’s crew is composed by Commander Lewis (Jessica Chastain), Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara), Rick Martinez (Michael Peña), Chris Beck (Sebastian Stan) and Alex Vogel (Aksel Hennie). This film also stars Jeff Daniels as Teddy Sanders, the director of NASA, and his team members: Vincent Kapoor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Bruce Ng (Benedict Wong), Mindy Park (Mackenzie Davis) and Rich Purnell (Donald Glover).

All in all, The Martian is a one of a kind must see science fiction movie that intricately embeds thought-provoking science, real controversial decision-making, and futuristic science applications humans have yet to develop. It captivates the audience and maintains the suspense with its controversial decision-making in space. I give this film 5 stars!

Macbeth Film Review (Group 2)

2

Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.

Micheal Fassbender stars as the title character (Macbeth) in Jusin Kerzel’s version of Shakespeare’s play which is set in Scotland, alongside Marion Cotillard as his ambitious wife (Lady Macbeth). Marion Cotillard is very effective as Lady Macbeth and has no problem with the accent and understanding Shakespeare. This is not the case for Micheal Fassbender since this is his first attempt at Shakespeare and he struggles with fulfilling the role. Additionally, due to the early modern English used by the actors and the abstract ideas presented in the film, it can be very hard to follow. The complicated plot can cause the audience to lose track of events.

Everything here is so perfectly in tune with itself – the bruised landscapes, the uniformly outstanding supporting cast, which includes Paddy Considine as a stolid, wary Banquo and Sean Harris as a wraithlike Macduff – that you might expect the film to feel a little self-contained like Game of Thrones with an arts degree. In fact, it’s the opposite: raw, visceral and contagious, its poetry gets in your bloodstream. All in all, Macbeth is a well put together film full of early modern English and abstract ideas that may lead the audience to confusion.

Macbeth Film Review (Group 1)

mc

This film based on Shakespeare’s tragedy and noir-thriller includes an impressive performance of Michael Fassbender as the main character MacBeth, a warrior noble-man and as his ruthlessly ambitious wife, Marion Cotillard representing lady MacBeth, who form the film’s dream-team pairing. Fassbender perfectly acts out Macbeth’s outbursts of anger and Marion Cotillard does a spot-on performance of the manipulative wife. David Theulis makes an excellent rendition of King Duncan,  who has a short yet charismatic appearance. To round off this outstanding cast, there is Sean Harris who plays anguished MacDuff.

As for the settings and the language, even though they remain un-updated (the action takes place throughout Scotland in the Middle Ages) they are impressive as the vast green fields can be seen in most of the scenes, with some scenes in interior spaces like tents or palaces. Nonetheless, the language can be difficult to understand at times, this makes the film more realistic but harder to engage with.

After hearing about the prophecy of the three medieval witches, Lady MacBeth persuades her husband to commit regicide. Consequently, MacBeth becomes the King of Scotland and rules like a tyrant. He gets rid of his enemies and those that oppose his kingdom. Near the end of the film, Lady Macbeth starts to regret her husband’s actions and decides to commit suicide. After her action, MacBeth confronts his biggest opponent, but gets killed in the action. Malcolm, Duncan’s son, is now the new King.

Macbeth is a film that can only be completely understood by experts who understand the Scottish accent and Shakespearian English. It is indeed particularly difficult to keep up with but the main themes can be easily appreciated. Macbeth is a film that should be seen once in a lifetime to appreciate a glimpse of Shakespeare’s masterpiece.

LEICESTER’S PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE

In the past few years, the town of Leicester has been a modest city from central Britain with a second division football team, until things started to change. Their football team no longer can be classified as a mid table mediocre team but as a Premiere League winner. Last season Leicester’s “Foxes” won the tournament going against all predictions, which led to unimaginable bets taking place.

For instance, a Hampshire man placed a five-pound bet for Leicester after watching the first match against Sunderland. When the 2015 Premiere League finished, he ended up with 7500£ in his pocket due to his determination. The biggest bet was of 75£ when the odds were 1500/1 he won more than 110.000£. As a result of the odds the betting industry lost more than 20 million.

Expert of the industry like Jessica Bridge from Ladbrokes (British betting company) stated: ”We’ve been in this game for 130 years and we’ve never seen anything like this, it’s a story for the romantics and whilst it’s going to cost us a few quid, we have to thank Claudio Ranieri and his team for upsetting the odds week in, week out over the last nine months”.

Leicester city went against all predictions proving that the impossible can happen. This demonstrates that a low-table team can always surprise all of us.

IPHONE 7 REVIEW

IPHONE 7 REVIEW:

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are very unusual devices. They are full of aggressive breaks from convention while wrapped in cases that look almost exactly like their two direct predecessors.

Inside that case, everything else about the iPhone 7 is a decisive statement about the future. The dual cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus are proof of the new era in mobile photography. The iconic iPhone home button is no longer a physical button, but instead a sophisticated ballet of pressure sensors and haptic vibration motors that simulate the feel of a button. The new A10 Fusion processor blends two high-power cores that rival laptop performance with two low-power cores that combine with a much larger battery to extend running time by up to two hours.

And, yes, Apple has removed the headphone jack.

Removing the headphone jack is an act of pure confidence from Apple, which is the only company in tech that can set off a sea change in the industry by aggressively dropping various technologies from its products. Apple decides that it’s time to move on, and it has a massive base of customers that love and trust the company who make it happen. And now it’s decided that the headphone jack is over.

After carry out extensive research, it’s clear to me that Apple has considered opinions about how the next generation of phones should fit into our lives. But it’s also clear that the iPhone 7 is a transitional step into the future.

La Raíz, Oques Grasses, Berri Txarrak, Ebri Knight and the orchestra Di-Versiones will be some of the groups participating in la Copa during the Fires de Sant Narcís in Girona, which will take place from October 28 to November 6.

Fires de Sant Narcís are a part of the festa major of Girona. A festa major is usually dedicated to a saint or virgin, who is the patron of whichever city holds the festa. In Girona’s case: Sant Narcís.

In addition, the Council remains committed to decentralize the concerts and take them to different parts of the city. Moreover, on November 4 there will be the Girona Grand Parade, which will include the participation of the Girona Marxing Band, Big Band Empordà Bufant Fort and Balkan Paradise Orchestra. This time they will not begin their routes separately, but they will come together to Plaça de Sant Feliu, where they will end the concert.

Furthermore, there will be the traditional Sardana dancing and performances by La Principal de la Bisbal and el Cor Maragall in the Auditorium. On November 1st, there will be the Sardana dance contest in the square Calvet i Rubalcaba.

Finally, the Councillor for Promotion of the Territory, Eva Palau, explained that the City Council has committed to quality, both with established and emerging groups; to reach out to the public as much as possible.
