In following years, New York’s economic and industrial growth made appropriate the title “The Empire State,” an expression possibly originated by George Washington in 1784. In 1809, Robert Fulton’s “North River Steamboat,” the first successful steam-propelled vessel, began a new era in transportation.

Over 300 athletes, including the pick of the local athlete clubs and Y.M.C.A. gymnasiums and many of the best men of the leading colleges and schools, competed at the seventy-second annual games of the New York Athletic Club at Travers Island, Pelham Manor, yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a crowd which was estimated to number upward of 10,000 persons.

2. Amrican museum of natural history

Since opening to the public in 1869, the American Museum of Natural History has evolved and grown. In addition to the Rose Center planetarium and regular exhibits, the museum hosts a revolving series of exhibits, so there is always something new to see
