La majoria d’estudiants de les nostres escoles i instituts són més joves que Internet, i se senten més còmodes escrivint en un teclat que en una llibreta d’espiral. Són més feliços llegint a la pantalla que en paper. Estan connectats permanentment amb els amics, a qualsevol hora i a qualsevol lloc.

La “Generació Google” són els nascuts després de 1993. Exploren el món amb tota la colla de gent jove que no té records abans de la web. Així es defineix en un estudi realitzat per la Biblioteca britànica: Information behaviour of the researcher of the future (11 de gener de 2008). Però hi ha també molts mites, i que aquest estudi valora fins a quin punt aquests s’acosten o no a la realitat.

Són més competents amb la tecnologia? Generalment sí, però també és cert que la majoria tendeixen a utilitzar aplicacions molt simples i menys utilitats de les que es podria pensar.

Són consumidors actius? Prefereixen els sistemes interactius en comptes de consumir la informació passivament. Els mitjans de comunicació passius, com ara la televisió i la premsa escrita, estan en declivi.

Prefereixen la informació visual respecte al text escrit? Aquesta percepció és certa, tot i que el text escrit és encara important.

Volen obtenir la informació d’una manera ràpida i immediata? Segons l’estudi no hi ha evidències que la gent jove sigui més impacient que la resta.

Troben més credibilitat en la informació del seus iguals que en la d’una autoritat? Segons l’estudi es tracta d’un mite, ja que valoren més la informació que prové dels professors i dels llibres de text, que la que troben a Internet.

Són la generació del “retalla i enganxa”? Hi ha moltes evidències per creure que sí.

Són cercadors experts? Això sí que és un mite. La literacitat informativa d’aquesta generació no ha millorat amb l’accés a la tecnologia. Passen poc temps avaluant la informació trobada (la rellevància, l’autoritat i la precisió). A més, tenen un coneixement pobre de les seves necessitats d’informació.

Una de les conclusions rellevants d’aquest estudi és que malgrat que els professors entrevistats tenen un bon nivell de literacitat informacional, no transfereixen als seus alumnes aquestes estratègies i actituds.
