Primary and ESO students participated a few days ago in the first territorial final of the FONIX, which took place at URV in Tarragona.

Javier García-Bayón (5th), Èric López (6th), Jaume Ferrer (1st ESO), Miquel Àngel Jiménez (2nd ESO), Mateu Segués (3rd ESO), Iñigo Andreu ( 4th ESO) and Juan de Bonilla (1st BATX) were the students chosen in the first knockout stage of the competition carried out at school. On Saturday these four students among more than 500 students from all over Tarragona’s province had to make difficult written tasks containing a variety of activities on vocabulary, reading and writing. There will be only a winner per each level who will have to face the second final in Barcelona, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

English Culture Week in 5th Grade

5th grade students have a great opportunity to improve their English skills thanks to this programme which takes place at a small English town called Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk) in England.

The boys live in a typical English residence for a week where they also have English classes in the morning. In the afternoons, the boys continue learning English with practical oral activities through the town: a treasure hunt, interviewing people at the local market, learning the rules of British sports, visiting the local Fire Station and spending an afternoon in Cambridge…

Oral English Class: the key to success

speakinturo

Tim Bowring is our English teacher for the oral English classes. All our students in Turó, from 1st Primary to 2nd Batxillart,  have got oral English class. The speaking groups are relative small (4 – 5 boys). In the speaking classes, Tim motivates our students and teaches them oral skills which will improve  their speaking ability and  their active participation in the class as well. In addition, these oral classes help our students practice for the Cambridge exams.

Primary: We love CLIL !

Turó is committed to CLIL (content language integrated learning). CLIL involves teaching a curricular subject through the medium of a language other than that normally used. The subject can be entirely unrelated to language learning, such as history lessons being taught in English in a school in Spain. CLIL is taking place and has been found to be effective in all sectors of education from primary through to adult and higher education. Its success has been growing over the past 10 years and continues to do so. In our case, all our primary pupils study P.E., science and arts & crafts in English. CLIL can offer a variety of benefits. For example:

  • it builds intercultural knowledge and understanding,
  • it improves language competence and oral communication skills
  • it develops multilingual interests and attitudes
  • it allows pupils more contact with the target language
  • it increases pupils’ motivation and confidence in both the language and the subject being taught.
