The night of June 23rd, or Sant Joan as it is known in our country, is a huge celebration, without a doubt one of the most traditional and popular among the holidays celebrated there. Since ancient times, just at the arrival of the summer solstice on the evening of June 21st, people have welcomed in the warmer weather with celebrations of fire, the ritual flames consuming all as a sign of rebirth and renewed life.

The origins of the celebration are indeed ancient; however they are also equally mysterious. There are some who believe it goes back to the Neolithic Age, when pagan celebrations were held to give strength to the sun god and thank him for the year’s harvest. One important aspect of the summer solstice is that it marks the longest day of the year and is therefore followed by the shortest night, so from that moment forward, the daylight hours begin to wane.

Over time, this so-called pagan tradition became christianized by the Church of Rome, who had it coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Saint John the Baptist. This adaptation to Christian ritual occurred in the 5th century of the Christian era.

Although varying in specific regional traditions, the celebration has remained constant to the verve and popularity for which it became known, bringing together communities and groups of families and friends to participate in the annual holiday. For centuries now, places near and far all over the European continent have glowed luminously with fire, one of the most essential, yet one of many equally important elements associated with this celebration.

As it happens, it is in our country where the evening celebrations of Saint John have remained true with the passing centuries, being celebrated with particular intensity in its towns and cities. Traditions such as Les Falles d’Isil in the Catalan Pyrenees, La Crema deth Haro in the Vall d’Aran, the unique celebrations held in Ciutadella and the Fogueres in Alacant, all intensified with the arrival of the flame from El Canigó, symbolizing the united cultural identity of Catalan-speaking lands.

Fa pocs dies aquest diari s’ha fet ressò d el baix nivell d’anglès dels catalans, un dèficit gravíssim per a un país que busca un lloc en la societat del coneixement. Ja fa molts anys que l’anglès és una obsessió de pares, empreses i govern. S’endeguen plans que omplen grans titulars i sovint naufraguen en inèrcies heretades d’un llarg aïllacionisme.

Polítics com els Maragall asseguren resultats espectaculars en pocs anys. D’altres afirmen que ja els tenim aquí, com quan Carod-Rovira, després de deixar clar que es diu Josep-Lluís, li va refregar pel nas a un noi de Castella i Lleó que els nens catalans acaben la secundària dominant català, castellà i anglès.

DAVANT UNA URGÈNCIA HISTÒRICA en què tants esforços han donat fins ara tan pocs resultats, potser valdria la pena plantejar-se si no cometem algun error de base i si convé repensar algunes idees molt esteses i poc realistes sobre com s’aprèn una segona llengua.

EL PRIMER TÒPIC QUE HAURÍEM DE DESMITIFICAR és la importància de l’anglès en la primera etapa de primària. Els pedagogs distingeixen molt bé entre adquirir una llengua i aprendre-la. Dels 3 als 9 anys, els nens estan prodigiosament dotats per a l’adquisició. És a dir, sotmesos a una autèntica immersió, assoleixen la competència bàsica d’un nadiu en dos o tres d’anys. Però deixem-ho clar: immersió vol dir que el nen no té escapatòria, que només es pot comunicar si fa servir aquella llengua. I això només és viable per a molt pocs -si un dels pares és nadiu, si va a una escola anglesa, si viu un temps a l’estranger-. Per contra, en aquest mateix tram d’edat, els nens tenen grans dificultats per aprendre una segona llengua estudiant-la formalment. Mentre que la immersió activa les capacitats innates, l’estudi formal exigeix una maduresa cognitiva que en aquestes edats no es té. Això queda molt ben reflectit en un estudi de la UB segons el qual els nens que comencen a fer anglès als 4, 8 o 10 anys arriben als 14 amb un nivell molt similar. En efecte, és a partir dels 10 que l’aprenentatge s’accelera i compensa en molt poc temps la diferència d’hores acumulades.

ALGUNS PARES S’OBSESSIONEN i es culpabilitzen pensant que desaprofitar el tram 3-9 anys és fer al nen un mal irreversible. Se’ls hauria d’explicar que, si bé és cert que una exposició tardana a la llengua pot deixar la seqüela d’un lleuger accent, no compromet gens l’objectiu essencial: una comunicació fluida (i si no que ho preguntin al Matthew Tree). I que, en tot cas, hores i hores d’ensenyament que sovint costen molts diners i sacrificis acabaran amb resultats molt minsos. Aprèn més un adolescent de 16 o 17 anys vivint un mes amb una família anglesa que estudiant l’idioma un munt d’anys a l’escola i en tota mena d’acadèmies.

A PARTIR DELS DEU ANYS, els nens, amb el cervell i l’oïda encara oberts, comencen a tenir prou maduresa cognitiva per treure profit de l’ensenyament formal. Els mitjans abocats dels 10 als 30 són els més rendibles perquè, si bé es cert que va minvant la capacitat d’adquisició, també ho és que augmenta la d’aprenentatge, que arriba al zenit a la universitat, quan la motivació i la disciplina són màximes.

RECENTMENT EL GOVERN CATALÀ ha llançat un pla per impulsar l’anglès que es basa a destinar un gran pressupost al reciclatge d’uns 15.000 docents en actiu perquè en un futur proper puguin impartir assignatures en anglès a partir dels 4 anys. La idea d’agafar un mestre de mitjana edat amb coneixements nuls o molt bàsics d’anglès, ficar-lo en una aula d’EOI i fer-lo estudiar mentre no deixa de treballar en una feina esgotadora, esperant que al cap de cinc anys pugui fer la classe en anglès de manera competent i efectiva, és d’un optimisme delirant.

L’ANGLÈS COM A LLENGUA VEHICULAR a primària no pot consistir a ensenyar els colors i quatre cançonetes. Perquè tingués sentit en aquesta etapa hauria de ser llengua de comunicació bàsica a l’aula i això exigeix un domini oral que poquíssims mestres tenen. Perquè algun dia tinguem aquests mestres abans hem de tenir prou especialistes en anglès que els puguin formar. En l’actual situació, resulta més realista destinar els recursos als professors d’institut i EOIs, i sobretot als futurs docents, a qui cal ajudar ara, quan encara no treballen, amb estades a l’estranger.

AMB AQUESTA BASE PODREM FER DE L’ANGLÈS de secundària la rampa de llançament perquè els adolescents surtin a Europa sense l’angoixa de no ser capaços de fer-se entendre. Perquè el que de debò portarà un canvi cultural i de mentalitat és que molts més joves facin estades de mesos en països europeus i ampliïn els horitzons culturals. Aprendre anglès és pràctic i necessari però és també fonamental per obrir-se mentalment, respectar la diferència i integrar-se de ple en la cultura democràtica europea.
