Do you really know how to use Google? Lesson 1: Basics.

21 11 2007

Nowadays, as all teachers know, Internet is an indispensable tool for preparing the lessons. The net is an endless source of texts, activities, videos… That is why, we all teachers have to be very efficient in surfing on the net and spend the less time looking for what we need. We have to be efficient.

Following, I explain you how to use the most popular web searcher: Google.

1. Basics: Type the word in the Google search box. If it has a dictionary definition, the word will appear in the right-hand side of the blue bar that stretches across the top of yout search results. For one-word terms, “[definition]” appears next to the word. Clicking on that link will take you to the Answers.com for a definition / enciclopedia entry. You also can search for a word’s definition by typing [define:] into the Google search box followed by the word or phrase you’re looking up.

  • Pressing the SPACE bar means “AND“. You can use +, but you don’t have to.
  • You can exclude a word with a minus sign, eg fish -chips.
  • OR must be in capitals.

The query Aleix Ferrús means “find all the pages which have the word ‘Aleix’ and ‘Ferrús’ “. To find the person, you would have to search for “aleix ferrús” in quotation marks.

Welcome to English on net!

This is going to be a blog about resources for teaching English in primary school as a foreign language. Right now it looks quite empty (this is just the welcome post)… I hope in some days I will post some materials, links, videos… I will try to do my best because this is my first year as English teacher and I am really really busy.
