Have a chat with Santa

Father Christmas, also known as Santa, is coming back. If you want to know more about his life, you can have a chat with him. You have to be very careful about your  spelling and grammar, otherwise Santa will not understand your question. The goal of this activity is to practise personal information questions.

Go to: you’ll see a picture of Santa and two text fields. Type your questions into the bottom field and then wait for the answers.

Modal Verbs

In Unit 3 we have been talking about modals of obligation, deduction, ability and possibility. This is a ppt divided into four parts dealing with modal verbs. The 1st and the 2nd ppt cover the language reference, the 3rd ppt is for practise and  the 4th ppt is the answer key to the exercises.

Goodbye to the Normals

Goodbye to the Normals

Alfie Field

Goodbye to the Normals is a British short film, approximately 4 mins long, which follows a fictional story about a small boy running away from home. The film was originally broadcast in the UK by  Channel 4. It is currently touring the film festival circuit, either on its own or as part of the British Council Festival Submission Scheme.

I’ve prepared a listening for you but before you start watching the film, have a look at the vocabulary you might need to know  in order to understand the dialogue.

To run away = to leave a place or person secretly and suddenly

To take one’s fancy = If something takes/tickles your fancy, you like it and want to have or do it

To be all packed  =   be packed to have put your things into a bag or box, etc

A surgery =     the treatment of injuries or diseases in people or animals by cutting open the body and removing or repairing the damaged part.

Make up your mind on something = to decide

Can I give you a lift to the airport?  = Do you want me to take you to the airport?

Fairtrade = a way of buying and selling products that makes certain that the original producer  receives a fair price (Comerç  Just)

organic = not using artificial chemicals in the growing of plants and animals for food and other products. (biològic)

Watch the film and answer the following questions.

1.   Where is the boy going?
2.   How long is he going to be away?
3.   Is he worried about school?
4.  What is his dad going to do with his room?

Welcome to class

Hi everybody,

My name is Anna and I will be teaching Intermediate level during this academic year. You are most welcome to use the activities on this blog which I hope you  find useful and interesting.

This is the first post I’m sending you to talk about a site to improve your listening, reading, vocabulary and pronunciation skills.  I’m talking about  Read the Words, a free website where you can paste your texts and listen to them.

read the words

You only need to create an account for free, find a text you want to read and cut and paste it into the Read the words website.

You can actually listen to the text you have just read, so you can hear what it sounds like.

Now you can practise your grammar with Grammarman, the comic book hero who fights bad grammar (including Sammy Colon and Uncle Uncountable, just two of the villains who like to make trouble for the correction crusader) with his sidekicks Syntax and Alpha-bot. Watch  the first episode and spot the errors. If  you want to know more, click here.
